From NYTimes.com:
Bizingas & Friends (Tuesday) Bizingas is a canny jazz-rock band led by the trombonist Brian Drye, with the cornetist Kirk Knuffke, the guitarist Jonathan Goldberger and, on this evening, the drummer Jason Nazary. As will be the case every Tuesday this month, the group plays a single set (at 8 p.m.) alongside two other bands. Next week those other bands are Yapp, from Philadelphia (at 9 p.m.), and Roadtrip Ensemble, a large-group project of the clarinetist Mike McGinnis (at 10 p.m.). At I Beam, 168 Seventh Street, Gowanus, Brooklyn, ibeambrooklyn.com; $10 suggested donation. (Chinen)
Mark Helias: The Parlance of Our Times (Friday) Mark Helias, a bassist of exploratory ken, teams up in this band with a longtime acquaintance, the alto saxophonist Tim Berne. Their push-and-pull dynamic will likely serve as a fulcrum in the music, but not without making accommodations for the cornetist Kirk Knuffke and the drummer Mark Ferber. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, Greenwich Village, (212) 989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com; $10 cover, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)
Matthew Shipp Trio (Friday) On his most recent album, “Elastic Aspects” (Thirsty Ear), the searchingly percussive pianist Matthew Shipp explores a suite of new pieces for his working trio with the bassist Michael Bisio and the drummer Whit Dickey. The album is a study in turbulent flow, with small-scale compositions that break open to enable exploration. At 8 and 10 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com; $10 cover. (Chinen)
