Here is where I post, at a frequency of about once a week, a list of the new music that has caught my attention that week. All of the releases listed below I’ve heard for the first time this week and come recommended.

Avant Music News is currently looking to expand its selection of reviews. Particularly, we’d like to take on 2-3 additional reviewers.
To be clear, these are not paid positions, nor will there be any long term commitments from any party. However, if you’d like to have your words read by our audience of 1,000 or so people who are really into avant-garde music, this might be a good opportunity.
Avant Music News covers modern classical, free jazz, avant rock, ambient, noise, and various other types of music, especially the type that defies categories. Lately, I’ve been getting tons of promo material and requests to review this material. I don’t write reviews personally, but I include the releases that fit the scope of the site in my AMN Picks of the Week.
Currently a couple of kind individuals are submitting reviews. I’d like to have a few more folks signed up. I will be able to provide digital copies of full albums for reviewers’ consideration.

Aaron Einbond is one of today’s most distinguished and promising young American composers. Dal Niente is thrilled to present the world premiere of his new piece, which was commissioned for the ensemble by the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University. Einbond’s music mixes field recordings, original electronic effects, and instrumental technique of startling originality and dynamic range. Ensemble member Amanda DeBoer Bartlett will be the featured solo voice in the center of Einbond’s masterfully constructed maze of vivid sounds.
DeBoer Bartlett will also be the soloist in Greek composer Georges Aperghis’s La nuit en tête, a scintillating, frenetic psychodrama awash in a swirling, hazy rainbow of ghost colors. This noisy dreamscape contrasts beautifully with the music of Salvatore Sciarrino, who conjures drama and tension through the gradual layering of small sounds atop a field of pure silence. Sciarrino’s set of pieces entitled Esplorazione del bianco are perfect examples of his magical approach to sound and evocation of the secret voices of nature.
Julian Anderson is one of Britain’s most celebrated composers, but his work is too rarely performed in the U.S. His Khorovod for chamber orchestra is inspired by the bustling energy and melodic language of eastern European folk dances. Anderson transforms these melodies into a dizzying whirlwind of symphonic color and rhythmic drive: the perfect capstone for Dal Niente’s stellar 2011-12 season.
Ensemble Dal Niente has made Chicago its home since its founding in 2004. With a growing international reputation for virtuosic musicianship and fearlessly eclectic programming, the ensemble will present two concerts at the famous New Music Courses in Darmstadt, Germany, in July 2012. Next season in Chicago, the ensemble will premiere a new work for octet, electronics, and synced video projection by Minneapolis composer Noah Keesecker. The project was awarded a major grant by the American Composers Forum and the Jerome Foundation.
