The Bad Plus (Tuesday through April 29) Since forming just over a decade ago, this acoustic power trio — Reid Anderson on bass, Ethan Iverson on piano, David King on drums — has been known for its canny twists on the pop repertory, though the group has also developed an impressive book of original tunes, with each member pitching in. The band seems likely to draw here from “Made Possible,” its forthcoming eighth studio album, which makes this engagement a sneak preview for some typically brave new material. At 8 and 10:30 p.m., Blue Note, 131 West Third Street, West Village, (212) 475-8592 bluenote.net; $25 cover at tables, $15 at the bar, with a $5 minimum. (Chinen)
Han Bennink 70th Birthday Concert (Saturday) If you’ve been listening to WKCR, 89.9 FM, this week, you know that Mr. Bennink, the eminent Dutch jazz drummer, just turned 70; you also know that his art is as much about flourish as it is about tempo (though he can swing on a dime). This concert, the culmination of WKCR’s marathon birthday broadcast, will feature him in the company of some prominent collaborators, including the multireedist Michael Moore, the keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum, the trombonist Ray Anderson, the trumpeter Thomas Heberer, the violinist Mary Oliver, the bassist Mark Dresser and the pianist Uri Caine. At 7:30 p.m., Italian Academy at Columbia University, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue, Morningside Heights, (212) 352-3101, cuarts.com/calendar/view/type/4/event_id/13300; $25. (Chinen)
Jon Irabagon Trio (Friday) The intrepid young saxophonist Jon Irabagon has done some fine work in a trio format, with bass and drums puttering behind him. Here his drummer is Rudy Royston; in lieu of a bassist, there’s Sean Wayland, on electric organ. At 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 p.m., Bar Next Door, 129 Macdougal Street, Greenwich Village, (212) 529-5945, lalanternacaffe.com; $12 cover, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)
Rudresh Mahanthappa: Samdhi (Saturday) At heart Mr. Mahanthappa, an alto saxophonist of slashing clarity, has long been a proponent of fusion, at least in the cross-cultural sense of the word. His most recent album, “Samdhi” (ACT), evokes another usage, with a driving electro-acoustic band featuring the guitarist David Gilmore and the bassist Rich Brown, who both appear here, along with the drummer Gene Lake and the mridangam player Anantha R. Krishnan. At 10 p.m., Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, (212 247-7800, carnegiehall.org; $39 to $50. (Chinen)
