Here is where I post, at a frequency of about once a week, a list of the new music that has caught my attention that week. All of the releases listed below I’ve heard for the first time this week and come recommended.

This week, you’ll note a pair of releases from Klippa Kloppa. This Italian group has releases an EP or “single” about once a month on their Bandcamp page. If you like experimental, avant-rock, Zappa-influenced improv, check them out.

Harris Eisenstadt – September Trio (2011)
Jannick Top – Infernal Machina (2008)
Mike Patton – The Solitude of Prime Numbers (2011)
Klippa Kloppa – Gomeisa (2011)
Klippa Kloppa – La lega delle vergini (2011)

Also excited to announce the new release from the mighty collective The Thirteenth Assembly, Station Direct (Important Records). Music and compositions from Jessica Pavone (viola), Mary Halvorson (guitar), Tomas Fujiwara (drums), and me. We’ll be having a CD release show in NYC on January 18th at Brooklyn’s Ibeam, if you’re good with advance planning.

I’ve picked up some freelance work doing interviews for the Oral History of American Music project, talking to some of the living giants of creative music. My first interview was with Wadada Leo Smith, and in honor of his 70th birthday and 2-day concert celebration at Roulette (I’m excited to be joining his Silver Orchestra on Friday night), I’ve posted an excerpt from our conversation on my blog. As I collect more interviews, I hope this will become a regular feature on my website, stay tuned.

I was also invited by the excellent website Destination Out to put together a feature on another of my musical heroes (and a member of my sextet), Bill Lowe. It’s turned into a larger kind of oral history project than we expected; Bill tells an amazing story. The first part (early years through late ’60s London and mid-’70s New York) will be going up on Destination Out this week, complete with rare recordings, radio broadcasts, and audio from our interviews so you can hear the story in Bill’s own voice.
