509 Atlantic Ave (corner of Atlantic and 3rd Ave)Interpretations celebrates the work of innovative trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith on the occasion of his 70th Birthday. Wadada Leo Smith, who turns 70 on December 18th, will present six projects with an all-star cast. The material includes numerous world premieres and fresh music from his most recent CD releases!
December 15th features Leo Smith’s Golden Quartet (with Angelica Sanchez, John Lindberg, and Pheeroan akLaff), Mbira (with Min Xiao Fen and Pheeroan akLaff), and the premiere of Opuntia Humifosa String Quartet # 9, for string quartet (led by FLUX Quartet’s Tom Chiu) plus baritone Thomas Buckner and Mr Smith on trumpet.
December 16th features Leo Smith’s Golden Quintet (adding Susie Ibarra on drums), his electric band Organic, and the Silver Orchestra, featuring Jennifer Choi, Jessica Pavone, Wendy Law (strings), Jamie Baum, Marty Ehrlich, Sara Schoenbeck, Mark Taylor, J.D. Parran, Jason Mears (winds), Ted Daniel, Taylor Ho Bynum (brass) Yuko Fujiyama (piano), John Lindbreg (bass), Liberty Ellman, Han-Earl Park (guitar), and Bobby Naughton, Susie Ibarra, Martin Obeng, Harris Eisenstadt, (percussion), performing Central Park (featuring Thomas Buckner, voice) and the premiere of his latest work, Occupy the World: For Freedom.
