Any cartoon of Alvin Curran would have to include two tiny figures sitting on his shoulders and whispering advice into his ears—but not the stereotypical angel and devil. Instead, Curran’s tutelary spirits are Elliott Carter, at 102 the undisputed dean of American academic composers, and John Cage, the late prankster guru of the international avant garde.
