Issue Project Room will co-present a night of both historical works and new compositions inspired by Fluxus ideas, in collaboration with Performa, at the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center on Suffolk Street. The evening will include noise artist Felix Kubin and New York underground musician Lary 7, as well as practitioner of “compositional linguistics” Chris Mann, and a performance by former Artist-in-Residence MV Carbon on her TV cello, a sculpture and instrument inspired by original Fluxus pioneer Nam June Paik.

Annea Lockwood, “A Sound Map of the Housatonic River” (2010)
Annea Lockwood’s installation “A Sound Map of the Housatonic River” (2010) is constructed from both surface and underwater recordings of the Housatonic River, from the river’s source in the Berkshire mountains to its mouth in the Long Island Sound. The installation will run from 10 am – 5 pm daily (11/14 – 11/18) and beginning at 8 pm on evenings with performances.

Artist-in-Residence James Ilgenfritz + Dither + Josh Sinton, Jeremiah Cymerman & Brian Chase
James Ilgenfritz juxtaposes his work as a composer and as an improviser, splitting the evening between a large-scale improvisational work for a quartet featuring Josh Sinton (amplified contrabass clarinet), Jeremiah Cymerman (amplified clarinet), and Brian Chase (drums, percussion) and the premiere of two new chamber works: a tragically cloud-like duet for violin and vibraphone and an enigmatic work featuring New York’s renowned electric guitar quartet Dither.

Littoral: Alison Knowles
Alison Knowles was born in New York City in 1933. She is a visual artist known for her soundworks, installations, performances, publications and association with Fluxus, the experimental avant-garde group formally founded in 1962. Among her work within the Fluxus movement, Knowles collaborated with John Cage to produce Notations, a book of experimental composition, and Coeurs Volants, a print composed with Marcel Duchamp. Her event score Make a Salad drew an audience of over 3000 people to the Tate Long Weekend in 2008.
Loose Pages engages with the sculptural potential of the book through performance. Originally produced in collaboration with master paper maker Coco Gordon, Loose Pages translates the book spine into human form; flax and cotton paper pages from a portfolio opens up into pages for the body, arm flaps, leg flaps, hat and slippers. A performer (usually Knowles’ daughter, Jessica Higgins) dresses in the pages, which sound as the body moves about the space.
Loose Pages will be followed by Alex Waterman, who will perform one of Knowles’ Bean Scores on cello. Waterman is a founding member of the Plus Minus Ensemble, based in Brussels and London, specializing in avant-garde and experimental music. In New York he performs with the Either/Or Ensemble.

Moniek Darge + Françoise Vanhecke & Graham Lambkin
Moniek Darge, of the Belgian Logos Foundation, has been creating sonic art since the 1970s. Her soundscapes paint an aural picture of different locations in the world. Recently, she has also created collective soundscape compositions with other female composers. She will present some of these works, as well as others, with guests Françoise Vanhecke and Graham Lambkin. The most recent work brings sounds from Tamil Nadu in India and evokes the aural worlds of nature, rituals, commercial music and traffic.
Françoise Vanhecke is a vocalist, pianist, actress and composer. Darge and Vanhecke will present East Crete, Mother Goddess, a work compiled entirely from field recordings in Crete. Originally composed as part of annual intermedia arts event Levka Ori, East Crete, Mother Goddess fuses land and sound art to evoke the atmosphere of the island and recall the ancient hope for a utopian society.
Graham Lambkin was a part of the band The Shadow Ring, formed in England when he was 19. He moved to the U.S. in 1998, and in 2003 released I’m Some Songs with The Shadow Ring. Over the last few years, Lambkin has primarily worked under his own name, releasing two solo records (Salmon Run and Softly Softly Copy Copy), and two hardcover books featuring his writing and drawings (Dumb Answer to Miracles and Dripping Junk). His own Kye label releases both his own work and that of artists like Moniek Darge and Vanessa Rossetto.

Annea Lockwood presents Ear-Walking Woman performed by Lois Svard + Olivia Block
Born in New Zealand, Annea Lockwood’s work ranges from sound art and installations to text-sound and performance art to concert music. Ear-Walking Woman, for prepared piano and exploring pianist, is an open-ended exploration; the piece determines which “tools” are used in each section, and the pianist is asked to listen closely to the sounds created by each action. The piece was commissioned by Lois Svard, and is dedicated to her.
Olivia Block creates original sound compositions for concerts, site-specific multi-speaker installations, film, and performance. Her compositions often include field recordings, scored segments for chamber instruments, and electronic textures. She works with chamber ensembles, using both notation and improvisation techniques, and performs partially improvised compositions for inside-piano and electronics. Her recording with Greg Kelley is forthcoming from Erstwhile Records.
