From NYTimes.com:
Jon Irabagon Trio (Friday) Jon Irabagon, a saxophonist of frisky temperament and formidable technique, has lately been working to strong effect in a trio format; his partners in this one are the bassist Yasushi Nakamura and the drummer Rudy Royston. At 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 p.m., Bar Next Door, 129 Macdougal Street, near West Third Street, Greenwich Village, (212) 529-5945, lalanternacaffe.com; $12 cover, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)
Darius Jones Quartet (Friday) Darius Jones has the capacity for a proud, rafters-raising tone on alto saxophone, and as an improviser he’s fearless but disciplined. In this quartet, a different lineup than usual for him, he works with the pianist Matt Mitchell, the bassist Trevor Dunn and the drummer Ches Smith. At 8:30 p.m., I-Beam Music Studio, 168 Seventh Street, Gowanus, Brooklyn, ibeambrooklyn.com; $10 suggested donation. (Chinen)
The Masters Quartet: Steve Kuhn, Dave Liebman, Steve Swallow, Billy Drummond (Friday and Saturday) Three members of this all-star band share substantial history: the pianist Steve Kuhn, the multireedist Dave Liebman and the bassist Steve Swallow all worked together in the early 1980s. The name of their current group, which also includes Billy Drummond on drums, may have something to do with Mr. Leibman’s recent recognition as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Or it may just be a collective assertion, richly deserved. At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton, (212) 581-3080, birdlandjazz.com; $30 and $40, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)
Pi Recordings at the Stone (Friday through Thursday) The adventurous and often stylish label Pi Recordings has programmed the latter half of August at the Stone, enlisting some of the stalwarts on its roster — like the alto saxophonist Steve Coleman, who plays in four different trios on Friday and Sunday at 8 and 10 p.m. Among the other highlights: the guitarist Liberty Ellman, leading a quintet that includes the pianist Vijay Iyer, on Saturday at 8 p.m.; Steve Lehman, another sharp alto saxophonist, leading a small group on Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 p.m.; and Chris Dingman, a vibraphonist, working in a trio on Thursday at 8 p.m. The Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com; $10 cover. (Chinen)
Jenny Scheinman’s Mischief & Mayhem (Friday through Sunday) Ms. Scheinman, a violinist, favors a style both folksy and exploratory, leaning a bit more to the latter with this band, formed a few years ago and making a repeat appearance here. Her partners are the engagingly prickly guitarist Nels Cline, the stalwart bassist Todd Sickafoose and the polymorphically propulsive drummer Jim Black. At 9 and 11 p.m., Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village, (212) 255-4037, villagevanguard.com; $25 cover, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)
