Downtown Music Gallery is profiled by NYTimes.com:

Beneath the incense burners and chanting celebrating the 2,555th anniversary of Buddha’s birth at a Chinese temple upstairs, an unearthly din rose from the basement of 13 Monroe Street in Chinatown the other Sunday to observe a more recent anniversary. The extended 20th birthday party of the Downtown Music Gallery, purveyors of progressive music of all stripes since 1991, was in full, lurching swing, and more than a dozen brave souls huddled around a makeshift stage for another weekly ritual, a free performance series that gives literal meaning to the term underground music.
