Didier Petit is a world-class cellist living in France but traveling all over what Peter Kowald used to call the “Gobal Village”, working with a variety of international improvisers from as diverse places as Finland, China or Neverland. He also created the in situ label, devoted to creative improvised music, twenty years ago, and has organized many concerts and events over the years. This past year, he has travelled to United States regularly, where he recorded “Dont Explain” a solo CD featuring his original compositions.
His upcoming performance at Royal T is part of his “North by Northwest” series, a string of improvised duos and trios unfolding in every major city in the US from New York to Los Angeles.

In addition to his composing and performance, Sharp has also been an instrument builder, inventor and conceptualist. In 2002, he began a collaboration with luthier Saul Koll to create an electroacoustic 8-string guitarbass which was completed in 2005. Since then, E# has been performing on the instrument, exploring its sounds and potentials. He has composed a suite of pieces, OCTAL (which was released on CD by the Clean Feed label based in Lisbon), that fully melds his huge personal vocabulary of extended techniques and unique compositional and improvisational strategies to the possibilities of this beautifully sculptured guitar.

John Hollenbeck Profiled

From NewMusicBox:

Composer and drummer John Hollenbeck seems most content when faced with musical uncertainty of any sort. Whatever the musical context, Hollenbeck lets go of conceptions around style and genre, happy to enjoy musical experiences without the immediate need to know exactly what they are or where they might be heading. His primary musical residence is arguably the jazz world, where he composes for and plays with his own groups, Claudia Quintet and the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, performs as a sideman with a wide variety of musicians, and holds a professorship in Jazz Drums and Improvisation at the Jazz Institute Berlin in Germany. In addition, Hollenbeck is an active participant in the new music community, composing for groups including the Bang On A Can All-Stars, and composing and performing with Meredith Monk. His interest in diverse musical experiences and the desire to imbue each piece with its own individual musical language are further informed by the practice of meditation and a deep interest in contemporary composition, creating music that is at once lyrical, approachable, and complex.
