Jazz Listings from the New York Times

Paul Motian

From NYTimes.com:

Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society / Ben Allison Band (Thursday) Mr. Argue, a staunchly contemporary big band composer, leads his flagship with authority, infusing a modern-jazz sound with choice aspects of classical music and indie-rock. He and his crew go on at 9:30 p.m.; at 8 the bassist Ben Allison presents his working band, which has a new album of reimagined rock and pop covers, “Action-Refraction” (Palmetto). Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street, between Third and Fourth Avenues, Gowanus, Brooklyn , littlefieldnyc.com; $16. (Chinen)

Tim Berne, Matt Mitchell, Ches Smith (Tuesday) Mr. Berne, the aggressively momentum-driven alto saxophonist and composer, introduces some new pieces for a trio with Mr. Mitchell on piano and Mr. Smith on drums. They appear at 10:30 p.m. as part of the Konceptions series in Park Slope, following what looks like a free-for-all with Mr. Smith, the pianist Gordon Beeferman and the saxophonists Ken Thomson, Pete Robbins and Matt Bauder, among others (at 9). Korzo, 667 Fifth Avenue, at 20th Street, Park Slope, Brooklyn , (718) 285-9425, myspace.com/konceptions; $5 suggested donation, with a two-drink minimum or $7 food purchase. (Chinen)

Paul Motian Quartet (Friday through Sunday) Paul Motian, a drummer of stubborn mystery, might seem an unlikely fit for a tribute to the fastidious Modern Jazz Quartet. But that’s his objective here, as he leads a group full of intriguing sidemen: the vibraphonist Steve Nelson, the pianist Craig Taborn and the bassist Thomas Morgan. At 9 and 11 p.m., Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village , (212) 255-4037, villagevanguard.com; $25 cover, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)

Matana Roberts (Friday) Ms. Roberts, an alto saxophonist, has lately divided her attentions between multimedia performance pieces (as on one new album, “Coin Coin,” released on Constellation) and straightforward but adventurous small-group work (as on the other one, “Live in London,” released on Central Control). Here she performs alone, unaccompanied, in a demanding format she has tackled before. At 8 p.m., Salt Space, 1158 Broadway at 27th Street, Fifth Floor , destination-out.com; $10. (Chinen)
