Okkyung Lee / Phil Minton / Mark SandersBased in New York Korean cellist Okkyung Lee has performed and recorded with musicians such as Laurie Anderson, Chris Corsano, Paul Lytton, Evan Parker and John Zorn. She has released two albums as a leader on Tzadik, ‘Nihm’ and ‘Noisy Love Songs’, a solo LP ‘I Saw The Ghost Of An Unknown Soul And It Said…’ and a trio album ‘Check For Monsters’ with Steve Beresford and Peter Evans.
Steve Noble & Alex Ward
Noble and Ward have been playing in duo for over 20 years – performing in clubs and festivals throughout Britain and Europe, most recently at the Incus Festival, Calling out of Context (ICA) and regular gigs at Boatting. Their music, always totally improvised, veers from abstraction to full on swing- and everything that falls between! They were featured in the TV serialisation of Derek Baileys book ’Improvisation, its nature and practise’.…………………………………………

Album launch ‘Urban Theme Park’
Tonight at the Vortex the Julian Siegel Quartet launch their new album ‘Urban Theme Park’ released on Basho records (SRCD 35-2).An established presence on the European jazz scene, reedsman Julian Siegel has toured with Hermeto Pascoal, Django Bates, John Taylor and US improvising stars Joey Baron and Greg Cohen as well as co-leading the influential group Partisans (with guitarist Phil Robson). With the Quartet Julian has chosen to work with this generation’s most distinctive voices – Liam Noble (piano and keyboards), Oli Hayhurst (double bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums) – to create a band that is becoming one of the most in-demand quartets on the scene.

Craig TabornCraig Taborn has made a name for himself through ground-breaking work with some of the most important musicians in New York’s ‘Downtown’ scene. Tonight Craig will be playing music from his new solo ECM record ‘Avenging Angel’, (his first under his own name for ECM), a distinguished contribution to the great solo piano tradition from this highly influential label. A powerful, purposeful and rigorous album, which rises to the challenges of the format and then transcends them, the recording explores the textural dimensions of sound, builds new structures and reveals a rugged lyricism.
