AACM Shows Coming to Ars Nova Workshop

Roscoe Mitchell

From Philly’s Ars Nova Workshop:

Running from June 4 – June 13, Ars Nova Workshop’s “AACM | Great Black Music” series will feature three performances by first generation AACM members Wadada Leo Smith, Henry Threadgill (with his highly regarded Zooid ensemble), and a special two-night Composer Portrait component showcasing the work of Roscoe Mitchell. This intimate Composer Portrait will feature a performance by Roscoe Mitchell and the Sound Ensemble, and an evening of Mitchell’s chamber works played by the S.E.M. Ensemble, Thomas Buckner, and Joseph Kubera. There will also be performances by young AACM members Jeff Parker and Mike Reed in duo, and the Collide Saxophone Quartet will play Henry Threadgill’s piece, “Background.” Many of these performances will be preceded by free public discussions where scholars and music writers – The New York Times’ Nate Chinen, award-winning jazz journalist Francis Davis, and Columbia University’s John Szwed – will talk with the performers about the past, present, and future of the AACM.
