Thursday, November 18, 2010
8PM at Roulette
20 Greene Street (between Canal and Grand)

Electro-acoustic and Multi-media works from two collaborative teams. Photographer and guitarist Ralph Gibson and multi-wind instrumentalist Jon Gibson collaborate on MUSIC & MOTION, featuring Jon Gibson’s 1975 video piece entitled One Way, and Ralph Gibson’s film Typography. Electroacoustic composer Alexandra Gardner and New York’s NOW Ensemble present an evening of Gardner’s new and recent chamber works, featuring the premiere of Mint Conditioner for double bass and electronics.

Described as “mesmerizing” by Steve Smith of The New York Times, the music of composer Alexandra Gardner has an expressive sound and a flair for the imaginative and unexpected. Performed by the dynamic young New York group NOW Ensemble, and cellist Leigh Stuart of FIREWORKS, the evening will feature new and recent chamber music, including the world premiere of Mint Conditioner for double bass and electronics, and the New York premiere of Now or Never, commissioned by NOW Ensemble.

MUSIC & MOTION presents new collaborative multimedia work from Jon Gibson and Ralph Gibson, two artists whose activities include both music and visual arts. Ralph Gibson’s work since the 1970s has been steadily impelled towards the printed page, and his photographs are included in museum collections around the world. Gibson’s awards include fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Jon Gibson has been a member of Philip Glass’s ensemble since the 1960s and has also worked with Steve Reich, Terry Riley, LaMonte Young, Merce Cunningham. Gibson’s visual work, closely related to his music, has been exhibited and collected internationally.
