John Hollenbeck returns to Edgefest

From Detroit Free Press:

Now in its 14th year, Edgefest, Ann Arbor’s annual celebration of avant-garde jazz and other improvised music, has long been one of the best reasons for living in metro Detroit. The festival, which runs through Saturday at the Kerrytown Concert House and environs, has adopted a theme for 2010, “Edged in Brass.” Its lineup is deep with leading brass players, among them trumpeter Amir ElSaffar, cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and trombonist Curtis Hasselbring.

Interview with James Ilgenfritz

From Roulette:

James Ilgenfritz approaches the double bass as an archeologist, examining rarified aspects of the instrument’s sonic palette to confound the status quo. On October 13th at Roulette, James presents two enembles: Trio Caveat and the Anagram Ensemble. Trio Caveat is an exploration of the intersection between free improvisation, spontaneous collage forms, and shifting harmonic vocabularies. The Anagram Ensemble blends sonic experimentalism, traditional formal inquiries, rhythmic angularity, and extended improvisational forms into a multifaceted ensemble dynamic. The original compositions the group performs integrate elements of chamber music, jazz improvisation, and distinctive structural constructs for generating improvisational forms.
