20 Greene Street (between Canal and Grand)Dynamic solo music from two of New York’s most unique instrumentalists. Min Xiao-Fen performs her new solo work “Dim Sum” for solo on pipa, Nanyin pipa, children’s pipa, sanxian, electronics, and vocals, incorporating her own calligraphy, paintings and other art. Jerome Cooper will perform his extended four-part work, “RING-PASS-NOT”, showcasing his multi-dimensional percussion concept.
Jerome Cooper’s daring improvisations layer melodic variations over immaculately precise, complex rhythmic patterns, to create profound spiritual experiences. Known for his distinctive approach to solo performance, his role in the deeply influential group the Revolutionary Ensemble, and for work with Cecil Taylor and others, his sound environment is developed with snare and bass drums, African talking drums, balafon, flute, and other fascinating sound objects. He begins with austere simplicity, underlining the pulsing metrical structure with subtle changes of pitch and duration that enfold the listener in an intense concentration which builds to trance-like contemplation.
Pipa player, singer, and composer Min Xiao-Fen moved to the United States in 1992, and has premiered works by such noted composers as John Zorn, Randy Weston, Tan Dun, and Philip Glass. She made an appearance on Björk’s album Volta. As a composer, she received a commission in 2007 for “Return of the Dragon” from The Kitchen in New York, followed by a performance with her Asian Trio.
