Two Jazz Greats, Tightly Bound by Chicago

From the Chicago News Cooperative:

Rudresh Mahanthappa grew up in Boulder, Colo., attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and lives in New York. But talking about his trip to Chicago, where he plays the Jazz Showcase this weekend, he sounded like a man heading home. Mr. Mahanthappa, the alto saxophonist, lived in Chicago for several years in the early 1990s, earning his master’s degree in arts at DePaul University and developing his complexly constructed, urgently propulsive music. Decades earlier, the city also fostered the jazz style of his mentor, Bunky Green. Theirs is a relationship forged by, though not in, Chicago.
