Thursday, October 21 at 8 PM: THE RESPECT SEXTET
“One of the best and most ambitious new ensembles in jazz” (Signal to Noise), The Respect Sextet will kick off the 25th anniversary season of North River Music series with music from their newest digital-only release, Farcical Built for Six (August 2010); selections their acclaimed album, Sirius Respect: The Respect Plays the Music of Sun Ran and Karlheinz Stockhausen (2009); and a collaborative composition/improvisation with the audience. The group is comprised of Eli Asher (trumpet, toys), James Hirschfeld (trombone, jamespectronics, toys), Malcolm Kirby (bass), Ted Poor (drums), Josh Rutner (reeds, radio, toys), and Red Wierenga (piano, keyboard, accordion, redspectronics). . http://www.respectsextet.com/

Thursday, November 18 at 8 PM: NE(X)TWORKS
The collaborative ensemble of improvisers/composers Ne(x)tworks will offer sneak previews of multi-instrumentalist/pioneer of the electric harp Zeena Parkins’ The Arcades Project (work-in-progress), inspired by Benjamin Walters’ monumental work of the same title, and ensemble member Christopher McIntyre’s Sites/Nonsites (work-in-progress), drawing from the oeuvre of renowned earthwork artist Robert Smithson. Also included in the evening is German composer Matthias Pintscher’s Study II for Treatise on the Veil (2005) for prepared string trio, and Jon Gibson’s Multiples (1972) for open instrumentation — a classic example of early minimalism from this stalwart member of New York’s experimental music community.

Friday, December 3 at 8 PM: PARTICLE ENSEMBLE (Thomas Buckner and Friends)
Thomas Buckner (baritone), Earl Howard (electronics and saxophones), Mari Kimura (violin and electronics), and J.D. Parran (winds) join forces in Particle Ensemble to perform compositions written by its members. On the program: Howard’s Frond for voice, violin, bass saxophone and live electronic processing; Mari Kimura’s Bucknerian for voice, violin and electronics; and J.D. Parran’s premiere of a new work for voice, winds and electronics.

Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 8 PM: ENSEMBLE HELACIOUS
Ensemble Helacious, formed in 2007, brings together masterful improvisers/composers J.D. Parran (saxophone), Peter Zummo (trombone), Kevin Norton (drums) for an evening of premieres and original compositions.

Friday, March 11, 2011 at 8 PM: J.D. PARRAN
Multi-instrumentalist/composer J.D. Parran performs an eclectic program of music for clarinet and saxophone, including Menon Dwarka’s premiere of Snake Charmer for alto clarinet and electronics and Parran’s vast array of improvisational compositions with extended techniques. http://www.yallnewyork.org/JD_Parran.html

Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 8 PM: JOAN LA BARBARA
An evening devoted to Joan La Barbara, “one of the great vocal virtuosas of our time” (San Francisco Examiner). La Barbara will perform John Cage’s “The Wonderful Widow of Eighteen Springs” (1942) and “Nowth Upon Nacht” (1984), both for voice and piano body, as well as Morton Feldman’s “Only” (1947) for voice alone. The program also includes one of La Barbara’s signature piece, “Circular Song” (1975) for voice alone, and a new work for amplified voice and sonic atmosphere. http://www.joanLa Barbara.com
