The Wire’s annual experimental summit is usually the only avant-garde game in town at the onset of autumn. But that was before Spain’s celebrated Sónar festival set up shop in Chicago. The two have wisely joined forces for a mind-expanding survey of “outsider sounds.” Newcomer Sónar leans electro, while the AIMM, now in its eighth year, encompasses everything from free jazz to tightly wound krautrock.
