Jazz Listings from the New York Times

From NYTimes.com:

John Hébert’s Rambling Confessions (Saturday) John Hébert, a bassist of deep intuition and extensive sideman experience, introduces a group with a discursive name but a promisingly direct lineup: Bennie Wallace on tenor saxophone, Jen Shyu on vocals, Andy Milne on piano and Billy Drummond on drums. Loosely configured as a nod to the jazz singer Carmen McRae, the group will serve up Mr. Hébert’s take on standards. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, at Spring Street, South Village , (212) 242-1063, jazzgallery.org; $20, members $10. (Chinen)

MAP (Wednesday) This sharply experimental collective — with Mary Halvorson on guitar, Reuben Radding on bass and Tatsuya Nakatani on percussion — draws here from “Fever Dream” (Taiga), its new, vinyl-only release. At 7 p.m., Barbès, 376 Ninth Street, at Sixth Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn , (347) 422-0248, barbesbrooklyn.com; $10 suggested donation. (Chinen)

Tyshawn Sorey (Tuesday through Thursday) Mr. Sorey, a restlessly creative drummer, presents three groups in residence at Roulette, each working with his compositions. Tuesday will be devoted to music from “Koan” (482 Music), his chamberlike most recent album; on Wednesday he digs in with Taylor Ho Bynum on cornet, Aaron Stewart on reeds and John Escreet on piano. On Thursday he leads a quintet featuring the saxophonist Loren Stillman. At 8:30 p.m., Roulette at Location One, 20 Greene Street, at Grand Street, SoHo , (212) 219-8242, roulette.org; $15, $10 students, under 30 and members. (Chinen)
