Present Music 2010/2011 Season

Milwaukee’s Present Music has announced their upcoming season; excepts below.

TOYS! featuring Margaret Leng Tan-January 8 at Turner Hall Ballroom – 7:30pm
The Present Music Ensemble will perform with Margaret Leng Tan (www.margaretlengtan.com), who has established herself as a major force within the American avant-garde. She is a talented and visionary pianist whose work sidesteps perceived boundaries within the usual concert experience. Tan, the first woman to earn a doctorate from Juilliard, actively collaborated with John Cage and is recognized as the pre-eminent interpreter of Cage’s music. Tan is the world’s first professional toy piano virtuoso. She will perform a piece featuring 17 different ‘toy’ instruments. This performance is supported by WMSE’s Alternating Currents.

D/iva featuring Iva Bittová-March 19 at Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center – 7:30pm
The Present Music Ensemble will perform with Iva Bittová (www.ivabittova.com), a Czech singer, violinist and composer with irresistible charm, original use of voice, and fondness of melodies that sit on the border of avant-garde and folk music. Her compositions are highly abstract yet deeply rooted in classical and gypsy music. This performance is supported by WMSE’s Alternating Currents and Brass Bell Music.

Season Finale featuring Amy X-June 18 at Turner Hall Ballroom – 7:30pm
Present Music welcomes back singer, composer and electronic instrument performer, Amy X (www.amyxneuburg.com). She bridges the boundaries between classical, experimental and popular music with her wildly entertaining ‘avant-cabaret’ songs. Amy X has been described as a one woman musical hurricane with exhilarating originality. In addition to performing with Amy X, the Present Music Ensemble will present Steve Reich’s 2×5 and Kamran Ince’s new quartet.
