Bagatellen Reviews

From Bagatellen:

Soft Machine – Drop
Mention the word “Canterbury” in certain circles and the likely reference is “Soft Machine.” Followers of the group’s transition from quirky psychedelia to a relentless and anthemic jazz-rock hybrid seem split on whether they like their Softs with Robert Wyatt’s otherworldly vocal whimsy or with only his drumming propelling organist Mike Ratledge, bassist […]

FAB Trio and Nu Band on Porter
Bassist-composer Joe Fonda has been a stalwart figure in the international creative improvisation community since the late ‘70s, though his fifteen years of regular appearances with reedman-composer Anthony Braxton probably stand out the most in his lengthy discography. However, it would be incomplete to call Fonda solely a Braxton acolyte – his work with pianist […]

Dominic Duval/Jimmy Halperin – Monk Dreams
“Monkish” is one of those descriptors that’s unavoidable in writing about jazz – Thelonious Monk’s imprint on the landscape of modern jazz and improvised music is huge and, more importantly, incredibly diverse. Odd-interval repetition, rhythmic bounce and dissonant delicacy have come to characterize a large segment of players, and soprano […]

Jazz Listings From the New York Times

From NYTimes.com:

THE BLOOM FESTIVAL (Thursday) This monthlong series, running every Thursday and Friday night in June, turns the spotlight on female instrumentalists, and specifically those upholding against-the-grain ideals. First is the drummer Allison Miller, leading a trio called Boom Tic Boom, which includes the violinist Jenny Scheinman and the bassist Todd Sickafoose. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Tea Lounge, 837 Union Street, near Sixth Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn, (718) 789-2762, tealoungeny.com; suggested donation, $10 to $20.

BOBBY PREVITE AND THE NEW BUMP (Saturday) On his atmospherically groovy recent album, “Set the Alarm for Monday” (Palmetto), the drummer Bobby Previte leads a rugged band with the tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, the vibraphonist Bill Ware and the bassist Brad Jones. The same cast reconvenes here, shortly after the midnight hour. At 12:30 a.m., Blue Note, 131 West Third Street, Greenwich Village, (212) 475-8592, bluenote.net; cover, $8, with a $5 minimum.

PHAROAH SANDERS (Friday and Saturday) The tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, one of the most significant survivors of 1960s free jazz, has never stopped imbuing his performances with the tone of a spiritual quest. At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton, (212) 581-3080, birdlandjazz.com; cover, $35 and $45, with a $10 minimum.

Ben Allison & Man Size Safe At Firehouse 12 Tonight

From Improvised Communications:

On Friday, May 29th, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will present acclaimed bassist/composer, and New Haven native, Ben Allison, with his newest ensemble, Man Size Safe, as part of the venue’s ongoing 2009 Spring Jazz Series. The band, which takes its name from a secret storage vault in former Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, mixes joyous exuberance and good-humored irreverence with textured grooves and the occasional political jab. Allison will be joined for this two-set performance by Jenny Sheinman (violin), Shane Endsley (trumpet), Steve Cardenas (guitar) and Michael Sarin (drums).
