In the Times:
HARRIS EISENSTADT (Friday and Sunday) Mr. Eisenstadt, a drummer and composer with an exploratory bent, presents two distinct ensembles this weekend. On Friday he leads his Petit Orchestre, a chamber group that includes the violist Tanya Kalmanovitch and the trumpeter Herb Robertson; on Sunday he celebrates the release of “Guewel” (Clean Feed), an album inspired by the music of Senegal, with players like the cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and the French horn player Mark Taylor. Friday at 9 p.m. and Sunday at 8 p.m., Douglass Street Music Collective, 295 Douglass Street, near Third Avenue, Brooklyn, myspace.com/295douglass; $15. (Chinen)
? ICP ORCHESTRA (Saturday) The acronym stands for Instant Composers Pool, which conveys both the immediacy and the integrity of this Dutch ensemble’s work. A 10-piece group with more than 40 years of history, it also happens to include some of the finest improvisers in Europe, like the pianist Misha Mengelberg, the drummer Han Bennink and the multireedists Tobias Delius and Michael Moore. At 8 p.m., Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand Street, Lower East Side, (212) 598-0400, henrystreet.org/arts; $15. (Chinen)
? PAUL MOTIAN, JOE LOVANO, BILL FRISELL (Friday through Sunday; Tuesday through Thursday) Mr. Motian, a drummer and composer, sets a tone for this blue-chip trio that’s shadowy, slippery and as open-ended as a koan; his longtime partners are Joe Lovano, on tenor and soprano saxophones, and Bill Frisell, on guitar. There’s no better place to see them than at the Village Vanguard, where they have memorably recorded. (Through Sept. 14.) At 9 and 11 p.m., Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village, (212) 255-4037, villagevanguard.com; cover, $20, $25 on Friday and Saturday, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)
SEX MOB (Friday) The members of this downtown institution have lately been engaged in various other musical pursuits, but their sound is as raucous, and their rapport as rambunctious, as ever. Steven Bernstein plays slide trumpet and leads the charge, though equal weight is pulled by Briggan Krauss on alto saxophone, Tony Scherr on bass and guitar, and Kenny Wollesen on drums. At 8 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com; cover, $10. (Chinen)
