Jazz Listings From The NY Times

In the Times:

TREVOR DUNN’S PROOF READERS (Thursday) Trevor Dunn, a bassist with one foot planted in experimental rock, takes a repertory approach with Proof Readers, his quartet with the trumpeter Nate Wooley, the saxophonist Darius Jones and the drummer Ryan Sawyer: the band plays music by the free-jazz pioneer Ornette Coleman, primarily from the late 1950s and early ’60s. At 10 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com; cover, $10. (Chinen)

DONNY MCCASLIN TRIO (Wednesday) Revisiting a premise from his strong new album, “Recommended Tools” (Greenleaf), the tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin digs in with a pianoless trio, featuring Ricky Rodriguez on bass and Johnathan Blake on drums. At 10 p.m., 55 Bar, 55 Christopher Street, West Village, (212) 929-9883, 55bar.com; cover, $10. (Chinen)

MARIO PAVONE DOUBLE TENOR QUINTET (Saturday) As the name implies, this new band features two tenor saxophonists: Tony Malaby and Jimmy Green. But its vision can be traced to the bassist Mario Pavone, a smart composer for compact settings, and its rhythmic undercurrent rests partly with the guitarist Michael Musillami and the drummer Tyshawn Sorey. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, West Village, (212) 989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com; cover, $10, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)

PETE ROBBINS AND SILENT Z (Sunday) Mr. Robbins, an alto saxophonist, leads Silent Z, a willfully progressive electro-acoustic outfit with Jesse Neuman on trumpet, Mike Gamble on guitar, Thomas Morgan on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums. At 8:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, West Village, (212) 989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com; cover, $10, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)

TODD SICKAFOOSE (Thursday) As a bassist, Mr. Sickafoose builds grooves from the ground up, but that’s no impediment to the buoyancy of his music. “Tiny Resistors” (Cryptogramophone), his fine new album, features a number of tunes in which horn parts and guitar lines swirl around a calmly asymmetrical pulse. Marking the album’s release here, Mr. Sickafoose enlists strong partners like the violinist Jenny Scheinman and the multireedist John Ellis. At 9:30 p.m., Joe’s Pub, at the Public Theater, 425 Lafayette Street, at Astor Place, East Village, (212) 539-8778, joespub.com; cover, $15, with a two-drink minimum.

WHOOPIE PIE (Thursday) The keyboardist Jamie Saft, the tenor saxophonist Bill McHenry and the drummer Mike Pride comprise Whoopie Pie, a doom-metal-informed enterprise with a recent album, “Sweet,” on Mr. Saft’s Veal label. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Tea Lounge, 837 Union Street, near Sixth Avenue, Park Slope, Brooklyn, (718) 789-2762, tealoungeny.com; suggested donation, $5. (Chinen)
