The Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra remains one of the finest creative jazz orchestras in North America. This time out Fred Ho guests and the band pays tribute to Ray Charles and Willie Dixon as part of a program of six Darrell Katz originals and the words of Paula Tatarunis whose provocative commentary complements the music on three cuts. In times when people seem reluctant to take stands on important issues, this release is a breath of badly needed fresh air. Hip, thought-provoking, and outstanding music from this powerful Jazz orchestra.

simple gamePure improvisation. These three are so conversant with the language of improvisation and their technical abilities are such that when they jump into the explorations they go right to the heart of the conversation. Barry Wallenstein
Euphoria RipensBarry Wallenstein (vocals/ poetry) w/ Adam Birnbaum (p) – Steve Carlin (g) – Daniel Carter (sax, clarinet, trumpet) – Vincent Chancey (Fr. horn) – Bob Cunningham (b)
Barry Wallenstein writes distinctive and accessible poetry and possesses a distinct voice that delivers prose clearly and with a hip, unaffected style. Perhaps what most distinguishes his recorded work is the respect for and equality of the music, of which his thoughts are an integral part.
Music and vocals are partners in this thoughtful and stimulating venture. It is a great balance between word and improvisation and is most listenable on many levels and demands.Silly Matters / Spaceman – Well Being – Tony Asks…. Bob Szajner Triad II
Live at the Detroit Montreux Jazz Fest 1981
Bob Szajner (p) w/ Ed Pickens (b) – Frank Isola (d)Bob Szajner is a bopster and prolific composer. He’s been in and out of the Detroit Jazz scene since the 1950’s. This release documents one of his last concerts and gives ample evidence of his talents and abilities. Complementing this package are extensive notes by the pianist along with perspectives by Michael Nastos and Bob Rusch. This nicely fills in a gap in Detroit’s Jazz history and is the complete package.
