CYRO BAPTISTA (Thursday) Drawing from his likably audacious new album, “Banquet of the Spirits” (Tzadik), Mr. Baptista, an ace percussionist, leads a band with Brian Marsella on keyboards and balafon, Shanir Blumenkranz on bass and oud, and Tim Keiper on drums. BROOKLYN JAZZ UNDERGROUND (Friday and Saturday) This young artist collective recently established its own label, Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records; this engagement is an album-release party for two of its members. On Friday the bassist Alexis Cuadrado revisits his original music on “Puzzles,” and on Saturday the bassist Anne Mette Iversen leads her quartet, with and without an accompanying cohort of strings. ROB BROWN (Sunday) Mr. Brown, an alto saxophonist steeped in free jazz, has a strong new album called “Crown Trunk Root Funk” (AUM Fidelity), featuring his music for quartet. He reconnects here with the enterprising pianist Craig Taborn, and enlists the bass-and-drums team of Todd Nicholson and Gerald Cleaver. JOHN HEBERT’S BYZANTINE MONKEY (Monday) This ensemble features the original music and bass playing of John Hebert, along with a pair of inventive saxophonists, Tony Malaby and Michaël Attias, and a restless rhythm section, with Satoshi Takeishi on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. MARK HELIAS (Saturday and Wednesday) On Saturday Mr. Helias, a bassist of reliable propulsion and often penetrating insight, leads Open Loose, a trio with Tony Malaby on tenor saxophone and Tom Rainey on drums. On Wednesday he performs a solo recital (at 8 p.m.) and later with a pair of texture-attuned peers, the trumpeter Herb Robertson and the drummer Nasheet Waits (at 10). TANYA KALMANOVITCH AND MYRA MELFORD (Thursday) Ms. Kalmanovitch, a violist, and Ms. Melford, a pianist, engage in this dual improvisation with a common grounding in European classical and Indian traditional music; they have worked fruitfully together before, as evidenced by “Heart Mountain” (Perspicacity), released last year. BEN MONDER TRIO (Saturday) In the capable hands of Ben Monder the electric guitar is a coloristic instrument first and foremost. MIKE MORENO QUARTET (Thursday) Mike Moreno, a proficient and thoughtful guitarist, presents new music for a promising group with Mike Pinto on vibraphone, Matt Brewer on bass and Tyshawn Sorey on drums. PAUL MOTIAN TRIO 2000 + 2 (Tuesday through Thursday) The masterly drummer Paul Motian introduces a new lineup for this ensemble: two saxophonists, Loren Stillman and Michaël Attias, along with Masabumi Kikuchi on piano and Thomas Morgan on bass. Expect a weightless and luminous sort of music, with an equal commitment to mystery and melody. (Through June 1.) SUN RA ARKESTRA (Sunday) Led by the alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, who celebrates his 84th birthday here, this ensemble carries on the cosmic avant-gardism of its namesake with an infectious ragtag brio.
