A new promoter’s ordinance is being voted on in Chicago tomorrow. It could have the effect of severely limiting the types of live music available in the city. While the ordinance is focused on controlling certain dangerous events, such as raves and unsafe clubs, it has the secondary effect of making small venue jazz and experimental music cost prohibitive.
Here are some low-lights:
Biennial promoter’s fees of $500 – $2000
Promoters must submit to fingerprinting
Promoters must register with the city
Promoters must carry upwards of $300,000 insurance
On the bright side, not-for-profit organizations appear to be exempt.
The city is voting on the ordinance tomorrow. If you’re a resident call your local alderman.
