Dr. Cole will lead a workshop examining his specialty: non-Western wind instruments, including the Ghanaian atenteben, Chinese sona, Korean hojok and piri, South Indian nagaswaram, North Indian shenai, Tibetan trumpet and Australian didjeridu.

He has performed and recorded Ornette Coleman, Jayne Cortez, Julius Hemphill, Sam Rivers, James Blood Ulmer, Fred Ho and many others. He has written acclaimed compositions for large and small groups: “The Seven Cycles,” “Freedom 1863,” and “Seasoning the Greens.” He is the author of two biographies, John Coltrane” and “Miles Davis: The Early Years, as well as many articles as jazz critic for Downbeat, Coda and other journals.
