Fast Forward: Coleman & Kagel at counter)induction

From New York’s counter)induction:

Please join counter)induction for the third concert of our 2007-2008 season, Fast Forward: Coleman & Kagel
This concert considers Mauricio Kagel as a window to the past and the future. Kagel’s compsitional output itself pivots between looking forward and looking backward. Tonight we encounter him as a teacher, a model, and a colleague.

Atem, one of Kagel’s theatrical amuses-bouche tells the tale of a retired musician attempting to reach perfection in both the execution of a melody while also obsessively maintaining his/her instruments, all in the hopes of completing this before death. Der Schall, written for 54 separate instruments performed by five musicians, has rarely been performed since its seminal recording. This performance will be executed by Anthony Coleman, a member of one of Kagel’s improvising ensembles. Joining Coleman in the performance will be noted ‘downtown’ musicians Greg Kelley, Tom Plsek, Joe Morriss, Ashley Paul, and Eli Keszler.

c)i will also be premiering a new work by Coleman, and performing Kurtag’s Hommage a R. Sch. and Douglas Boyce’s Quintet l’homme arme, both works which look back at music, with affection, but also with an eye for transformation; a Renaissance melody heard anew through a post-tonal filter, and the first master of thematic fragmentation portrayed in a series of thematically linked fragments.
