Frank Gratkowski – reeds
Wilbert de Joode – bass

The Kaufmann/Gratkowski/de Joode trio started playing together in 2002. The trio has toured Europe repeatedly and released two CDs with a third forthcoming. This group has been lauded as “a superb trio” for the close listening and collective playing that comes across as tightly unified regardless of whether they are playing introspectively or bombastically. They call their work “improvised chamber music” which is appropriate given the care and diligence that goes into every note that is played. The somewhat unconventional instrumentation of this group affords the players the opportunity to create something entirely new each time they play together. Portland is fortunate to host three masters of their instruments in an intimate setting. Fans, of creative and challenging music as well as jazz and classical music listeners will find themselves slack-jawed at the music this trio produces.
