Jazz in New York this week, from the Times:
★ DARCY JAMES ARGUE’S SECRET SOCIETY (Thursday) Led by the serious-minded jazz composer (and indefatigable jazz blogger) Darcy James Argue, this powerful and well-stocked ensemble juxtaposes postwar big-band conventions with ideas borrowed from indie rock, classical Minimalism and a handful of other idiomatic regions. The results are well worth hearing. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, at Spring Street, South Village, (212) 242-1063, jazzgallery.org; cover, $12, $10 for members. (Chinen)
LOUIE BELOGENIS TRIO (Friday) The tenor saxophonist Louie Belogenis is at his best freely improvising with creative partners like the bassist Eivind Opsvik and the drummer Harris Eisenstadt, who join him for a concert in his continuing series. At 8 p.m., SPACE Gallery, 207A Front Street, at Beekman Street, Lower Manhattan, (212) 393-9191, seaportdistrict.org; suggested donation, $10. (Chinen)

At 8 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com; cover, $10. (Chinen)
E.S.T. (Friday through Sunday) The initials stand for Esbjörn Svensson Trio, a popular acoustic jazz-crossover group from Sweden; taking its lead from Mr. Svensson’s piano, the ensemble favors somber harmonies and skittering electronic textures. At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., with and 11:30 set Friday and Saturday night, Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan, (212) 576-2232, jazzstandard.net; cover, $30, $25 on Sunday. (Chinen)
FAB TRIO (Friday and Saturday) FAB stands for Fonda- Altschul-Bang, which in turn stands for the bassist Joe Fonda, the drummer Barry Altschul and the violinist Billy Bang. As a collective, these three distinguished avant-gardists have released one potent album, “Transforming the Space†(CIMP), that probably only hints at the depth of their interaction here. At 8, 10 p.m. and midnight, Sweet Rhythm, 88 Seventh Avenue South, at Bleecker Street, West Village, (212) 255-3626, sweetrhythmny.com; cover, $25, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)

Various times and locations, fontmusic.org. (Chinen)
★ KNEEBODY (Monday and Thursday) This audacious jazz-rock-funk band makes the most of its hybrids, often savoring the crunch of collision. MICHAEL MUSILLAMI TRIO WITH MARK FELDMAN (Wednesday) “The Treatment†(Playscape), released this week, finds the adventurous guitarist Michael Musillami augmenting his working trio with Mark Feldman, a sharply expressive violinist.
