FIMAV 2007: Dualistic Banjos and Other Highs

The recently-ended FIMAV gets reviewed.

In Victoriaville, Quebec, a modest-sized town deep in the province’s French-speaking zone, the avant-garde — musicians and true believers — descend in droves for five days each spring. Now in its 24th year, the festival officially known as FIMAV (Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville) — Victo for short — has become a rallying place for those seeking a concentrated dose of stuff to the left of even the left of the dial.

Newsbits

The soundON Festival of New Music takes place June 13-16 and features San Diego State experimental music professor Joe Waters. Her Noise was an exhibition of women in experimental music, and a video is available of the making of the exhibit. Another video, this one of Anthony Braxton in Istanbul, is available. The Anton Kern Gallery is featuring the art of Don Van Vliet (Captain Beefheart). Finally, on the lighter side, a Sequenza21 blogger considers what kind of avant-garde music would best facilitate the iGasm, a new “toy” that is *ahem* driven by digital sounds.

Musique Machine Reviews

From Musique Machine:

Nina Nastasia & Jim White – You Follow Me
Sadly this collaboration between the usually wonderful Nina Nastasia & Jim White is a rather lacklustre affair of passable to by-numbers song writing, thats a mix of often random rhythms and folk strum.

Pauline Oliveros – Accordion & voice
This album is by one of most respected figures in American minimalism, original released in 1982 in a small pressing & has been out of print for some time, now Important give it it’s first cd releasers. The album consists of two long earthy, spiritual and mediative drone piece produced by of course accordion and Ms Oliveros voice.
