Upcoming Nels Cline Releases

As usual, Nels Cline has a slew of projects underway:

Here is a heads up on upcoming releases I’m involved with. Look for them sometime in 2005:

SCOTT AMENDOLA BAND – Believe (Cryptogramophone CD) This is the third disc by Mr. Amendola’s Band, and is the second one with yours truly. It features longtime Bandmember Jenny Scheinman on violin, John Shifflett on contrabass, and Jeff Parker (Tortoise, etc.) also on guitar. Scott’s music is stylistically wide-ranging, and this was a really fun session. I love playing with this band (whichever version!), and playing with Mr. Parker is always a treat.

LYDIA LUNCH – Willing Victim: The Audience As Whipping Boy (Atavistic ‘live’ concert DVD) In 2003 I had the pleasure of touring Europe with Lydia and a great band made up of pals and ex-Swans/Foetus music manglers Norman Westberg, Al Kyzys, and Vinnie Signorelli. The program was a retrospective of Lydia material of sorts, and featured streaming imagery devised by Spanish photographer Marc Viaplata and Lydia. It was by turns deviant, torrid, lurid, rocking, and cinematically poetic. And really a blast! This is a pretty minimally-produced document of the gig in Graz, Austria, done in conjunction with an art-historical international survey/museum show of art and masochism. Yeah, people!………

LEE RANALDO/THURSTON MOORE/CARLOS GIFFONI/NELS CLINE – 4 Guitars Live at Luxx (? CD) Well, if you’ve been checking out this site for awhile, you know that this ‘live’ recording has been looming for some time. Well, word has it that a different label (can’t remember who, sorry!) will finally release this totally accidental event which occurred in Brooklyn 2 or 3 years ago. The Williamsburg club – Luxx – isn’t even happening anymore! Originally, there were supposed to be 2 duo guitar sets: Thurston and Carlos, Lee and me, but things were running so late that Thurston suggested we combine forces and go home before 3AM. Someone ended up recording it. So get ready, it’s going to finally emerge! I don’t even remember much about it, save that it had some really good parts…. Watch this space for the label revelation.

LEE RANALDO/MARINA ROSENFELD/NELS CLINE – Live at Tonic, NYC (Atavistic Out Trios # 5 CD) Another accidental ‘live’ recording that seemed to have merit! I put this gig together with SY guitar star Ranaldo and turntablist/conceptualist/nail polish guitarist (and art star) Rosenfeld. It got taped. We liked it! No idea when exactly this will emerge.

THE ANUBIAN LIGHTS: This is an album of The Anubian Lights duo of multi-instrumentalists/groovemeisters Len Del Rio and Tommy Grenas along with amazing singer (and ex-Contortions member) Adele Bertei. The material is everything from gospel-infused groove to swamp moan to bubbly pop, and I’m on a lot of it doing a lot of different things.

ROVA SAXOPHONE QUARTET plus large ensemble performing JOHN COLTRANE’S “ASCENSION” (Atavistic CD) This is a ‘live’ recording of a rather mindblowing event that occurred last year in San Francisco at the Yerba Buena Center as part of a celebration of ROVA’s 25th anniversary. The personnel: ROVA members Larry Ochs, Bruce Ackley, Jon Raskin, and Steve Adams, Fred Frith (bass guitar), Otomo Yoshihide (turntables), Ikue Mori (laptop), Donald Robinson (drums), Chris Brown (synth), Jenny Scheinman & Carla Kihlstedt (violins), and yours truly. It felt GREAT at the time, but it even sounds good played back! Anyway, I’m pretty sure that the performance this March in San Francisco will be by the same ensemble that is represented on the Atavistic disc.
