Dal Niente Presents: “Voices” by Shanna Gutiérrez, flute
Nichols Concert Hall at the Music Institute of Chicago, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, IL
Flutist Shanna Gutiérrez presents an imaginative recital which explores the intricate and aged relationship between breath, voice, movement, and language. Each work is rooted in a specific text, which is then used musically through song or spoken word or as a vehicle for deriving other expressive sounds. Featuring five world premieres, in addition to Stockhausen’s FREIA, the music incorporates vocal text(ure)s, electronics, and choreography in some surprising new ways.

Upcoming Detroit Shows

Matthew Shipp Trio - Michael Bisio

From the Bohemian in Exile:

Saturday, Jan. 26th: Immigrant Suns, Orpheum Bell and Detroit Pleasure Society

A night of mostly acoustic music featuring a pretty wide range of instrument families in the colorful acoustics of Trinosophes. We won’t call this the anniversary show, but Immigrant Suns just turned 20 years old in December! Although appearances have been infrequent in the last decade, the Suns have a full album of new material and we’re excited to present it back on the block of Gratiot where the band was based in the early 2000′s.

For those who don’t know, Immigrant Suns plays mostly original music based on the folkloric music of the world. Over the course of it’s career, the band has released one cassette, four CDs and an LP to critical acclaim in publications like The Rough Guide to World Music, All Music Guide (now allmusic.com), Alternative Press, The Reader, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Cleveland Plain Dealer etc. and in long-gone music magazines like Option and Dirty Linen. With a distinct rock and roll sensibility, the band draws inspiration from the music captured on 78 rpm records in Greece, Albania, Egypt, Turkey, Armenia, Cuba, Mali, Bali and beyond.

Ann Arbor’s Orpheum Bell plays a hybrid of Americana, Kurt Weill via Tom Waits cabaret and “Gypsy Jazz” that’s heavy on the stomps and features lots of strings and the occasional unusual instruments like the saw and the Stroh violin. The band also recently added Nick Schillace and Jennie Knaggs to the roster, so I’m sure the sound has a nice new sparkle!

Doors at 9 pm; $7.
