Tyondai Braxton Blinds Everyone

From Pitchfork:

On March 21, former Battles member Tyondai Braxton will premiere a new multimedia project, HIVE, at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Braxton will play new compositions featuring modular synthesizer, sound design, and acoustic instrumentation alongside musician Ben Vida (Soft Circle, Bird Show) and percussionists Yuri Yamashita, Jared Soldiviero, and John Ostrowski. Each artist will perform atop a massive HIVE pod platform, designed and fabricated with Danish architect Uffe Surland Van Tams.

According to press materials, HIVE is “part installation / part band”, and the show will introduce “the creation of environments” and a “visual element” to Tyondai’s work. It was commissioned by the Guggenheim’s Works & Process series and is co-presented by Wordless Music.

From LA’s Monday Evening Concerts:

Local new music group wild Up, known for intense concert experiences, mix crazy-delicate string sounds by Xenakis, and the bright clamor of Messiaen’s mini-concerto for piano, winds, and percussion, with windows into the astonishing world of music in the Philippines. Being on the edges of continents, not Asian, not American, may have helped José Maceda and Jonas Baes find their own routes. Unorthodox instruments and combinations uncover the strange familiarity of nature, and the familiar strangeness – as happens, too, in Messiaen’s birdsong transformations and the music of English nomad Frank Denyer, whose work was a revelation of the 2009-10 season.

Olivier Messiaen – Oiseaux exotiques
Jonas Baes – Patangis-Buwaya
Frank Denyer – Faint Traces
José Maceda – Strata

Also, a trio featuring trumpeters Sean Elligers and Lou Guarino Jr. and electronicist Carl Testa will perform a set of improvisations. This is a first meeting for this group.
