From Indiegogo:

On June 8th and 9th, the CMG will host their first ever festival, The Improvisation Summit of Portland. It will feature two evenings of film, music, and dance. Local musicians will provide live scores to two films: unseen bear footage by Timothy Treadwell of Herzog’s Grizzly Man from Cinema Project, and a classic film curated by FilmMusik. Visiting artists John Gruntfest and Gino Robair will each lead large group ensembles. A panel discussion will be led by Tim DuRoche, and there will be improvisation and sectional workshops for musicians and dancers. Other artists performing include Grouper, Blue Cranes, Tenses, Megan Bierman (SF), Anton Hatwich (CHI), John Gross, Kevin Shields (Eva Aguila), Tim DuRoche, Thicket, Linda K Johnson, Woolly Mammoth Comes to Dinner, Linda Austin, Danielle Ross, Richard Decker, Cinema Project, FilmMusik, Jonathan, Samuel Coomes, Rebecca Gates, and many more.

Avant Music News: Nine Years On

On April 29, 2003, I started this site with a couple of posts.  Nine years later, over 14,000 posts have been published, we have north of 1,500 Facebook followers, and about 1,000 Twitter followers. I’m fairly amazed this many people are interested in weird music.

Over the years, things have changed up a bit. I get help these days from a handful of volunteers who contribute articles. However, I’m still doing this site as a hobby, On most days I get up a little early, read through submissions and select a few articles to post. Occasionally, throughout the day, I’ll add more. Sometimes I’m just too busy to do much with the site.

I constantly struggle with how to include as much information on AMN without it becoming overwhelming. I’ve settled on a general rule of providing 4-7 articles per day, some of which are “Newsbits” articles with a few unrelated nuggets of information. This means that, from time to time, I’ll miss or omit something.  This is not an ideal situation, but I need to be pragmatic about what I can and cannot accomplish.

Once of the fringe benefits of running a site like this is that I’m contacted on a regular basis by musicians who want to share their endeavors. In the past, this has taken the form of mailings of promo CDs as submissions for my “AMN Picks of the Week” articles. As the music world has evolved from physical to digital distribution, I’m now getting promo material via the Internet. A lot. In fact, I have whole directory of emails with links to such material that I haven’t had a chance to get to yet. So, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the musicians out there for sharing, and to apologize to these individuals for taking so long to get back to them. I will listen to and consider these releases, and I wish I had the time to do so more quickly.

Thanks for your continued support.
