From NYTimes.com:
Steve Coleman and Five Elements (Wednesday and Thursday) Mr. Coleman’s alto saxophone cuts cleanly through the angular compositional forms of his signature ensemble, which has a typically ambitious new album out this month, “The Mancy of Sound” (Pi). As on the album, the band’s lineup here features Jonathan Finlayson on trumpet, Jen Shyu on vocals and Marcus Gilmore on drums. Joining them are the guitarist Miles Okazaki and the pianist David Virelles, both conversant in Mr. Coleman’s quantum-level rhythmic and harmonic language. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, at Spring Street, South Village, (212) 242-1063, jazzgallery.org; $20; free for members. (Chinen)
Mario Pavone: Arc Suite Music (Saturday) Drawing from an album released on the Playscape label last year, Mr. Pavone, a progressive-minded bassist, leads a band with Dave Ballou on cornet, Tony Malaby on tenor saxophone, Craig Taborn on piano, Michael Pavone on guitar and Matt Wilson on drums.
