Classical Music Listings From The New York Times

From NYTimes.com:

JACK Quartet (Sunday) The excellent JACK Quartet plays a typically adventurous program at Le Poisson Rouge, with work by the composer and saxophonist Steve Lehman; Ligeti’s String Quartet No. 2; and the New York premiere of “Before the Universe Was Born” (Quartet No. 5), by the Romanian-French composer Horatiu Radulescu, who died in 2008. At 6:30 p.m., Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, near Thompson Street, Greenwich Village , (212) 505-3474, lepoissonrouge.com; $15. (Tommasini)

New York Philharmonic (Friday, Saturday, Thursday) Esa-Pekka Salonen continues his “Hungarian Echoes” series with a program that includes Haydn’s Symphony No. 8 (“Le Soir”); Ligeti’s “Clocks and Clouds”; and, with the pianist Olli Mustonen, Bartok’s Piano Concerto No. 1. On Thursday the violinist Anne-Sofie Mutter resumes her expansive series of Philharmonic appearances this season. With Michael Tilson-Thomas on the podium, Ms. Mutter will play the New York premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s “In Tempus Praesens.” Also on the all-Russian program: Prokofiev’s “American” Overture and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2. Upcoming Detroit Shows

Zeena Parkins

From the Bohemian in Exile:

Sunday, May 27th: Immigrant Suns @ The Gem Theater for the Downtown Synagogue’s 90th Anniversary
Come celebrate the revitalization of our old neighbor from Griswold St.! WDET’s Noah Ovshinsky MCs and light refreshments are included. The event is from 1-3pm, with Immigrant Suns performing at 2. $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

Wednesday, March 30: Keir Nueringer with Joel Peterson and Marko Novachcoff @ 2739 Edwin, Hamtramck
Experimental musician Keir Nueringer returns to the Edwin, with a little support from myself and Detroit’s most “multi” multi-instrumentalist, Marko Novachcoff. There is a great new instillation in the Edwin, which means both performers and audience will be navigating and interacting with the gallery show. Given Keir’s inter-disciplinary work in the arts, it should be right up his alley. Besides a lot of work as a soloist on saxophone, Keir also employs electronics, Farfisa and assorted other organs to create soundscapes that support his improvising. Doors at 8 pm; $5 suggested minimum. Parking lot accessible from the alley.

Friday, April 1st: Thollem McDonas and Clem Fortuna present an evening of microtonal piano music @ 2:1
Virtuoso pianist Thollem McDonas returns to Detroit for one of his extended stays, which kicks-off with this concert consisting of three baby-grands pianos in three different tuning systems, as devised by local musician/composer Clem Fortuna. In the works for about a year, this promises to be a unique concert of New Music by two of my favorite collaborators- something you won’t get the chance to hear again anytime soon. The concert will take place at 2:1, a temporary art space of Greg Holm in Eastern Market. 2:1 is located at 1464 Gratiot, on the 1st block North of Russell St. This concert is free and open to the public.

Bohemian in exile events at Detroit Art X in midtown Detroit…

Wednesday, April 6th: BoxDeserter at MOCAD for the Art X Detroit opening party
Thollem and I gather some of the region’s best musicians for another edition of the group BoxDeserter. This installment also features the talents of Skeeter C.R. Shelton on saxophone, Kurt Prisbe on drums and Abby Alwin on cello. Instant composing and free improvisation are the hallmarks of BoxDeserter, as is a spaciousness that evokes multiple, smaller ensembles. It’s all part of the kick off to Art X Detroit, but I don’t know what time we’re playing yet. However, it’s free and starts at 5:30 pm; there’s other good stuff on the bill too, including Marcus Belgrave.

Thursday, April 7th: Zeena Parkins and “String Quartet for a Pair of 45s” at MOCAD
We are proud to present the world’s leading experimental harpist and Detroit native Zeena Parkins in her first hometown appearance in years. Since graduating from Cass Tech (in the 70s) she took the New Music world by storm, becoming especially associated with the “Downtown” scene of the late 70s and 80s in New York. Noted also as a composer, curator and educator, Zeena has collaborated with an endless list of performers: Fred Frith, Nels Cline, Anthony Braxton, Bjork, Yoko Ono, John Zorn, Tin Hat Trio, Jim O’ Rourke, Christian Marclay etc.

Opening for Zeena is a string quartet performing my original work, “String Quartet for a Pair of 45s.” This short piece, which could fit on two 45 rpm records, will be my first opportunity to present my work without playing a note! Like “Freedom of Assembly” (below), I’ve got some top notch classical musicians performing (including some folks from the DSO, New Music Detroit and the MOT) and the whole event is FREE! Our portion starts at 7pm, but the whole event begins at 6 pm with a reading by my fellow Kresge fellow, Rachel Harkai.

Saturday, April 9th: Eugene Chadbourne/Tatsuya Nakatani and “Freedom of Assembly” at The Scarab Club
Wow! Word has it that the working title of this duo is “New Directions in Appalachian Music.” It’s a great combination of a pioneer and a young lion of improvised music.

Jazz Listings From The New York Times

Dave Douglas

From NYTimes.com:

Dave Douglas and Brass Ecstasy (Friday through Sunday) Mr. Douglas, the indefatigable trumpeter, cornetist and composer, introduced his aptly named Brass Ecstasy a few years ago, most notably on his 2009 album, “Spirit Moves” (Greenleaf). The band — with tuba, French horn, trombone and drums alongside its leader’s trumpet — tackles originals and pop songs with equal bluster and flair. At 9 and 11 p.m., Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village , (212) 255-4037, villagevanguard.com; $25 cover, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)

Instant Composers Pool Orchestra (Thursday) The name of this Dutch ensemble, often abbreviated to ICP Orchestra, conveys both the immediacy and the integrity of its mission. A 10-piece group with more than 40 years of history, it also happens to include some of the finest improvisers in Europe, like the pianist Misha Mengelberg, the drummer Han Bennink and the multireedist Michael Moore. This concert will also feature a set by the American accordionist Will Holshouser, with his trio. At 7:30 p.m., Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, near Thompson Street, Greenwich Village , (212) 505-3474, lepoissonrouge.com; $18, day of show $15. (Chinen)

Jon Irabagon Trio (Friday) When the ingenious young saxophonist Jon Irabagon convenes a trio, you can usually settle in for the long haul: his most recent album, “Foxy” (Hot Cup), had him crashing through a single tune for more than an hour. Here he seeks to emphasize something other than stamina, with the bassist John Hébert and the drummer Mike Pride. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, West Village, (212) 989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com; $15, with a $10 minimum (Chinen)

Odean Pope Saxophone Choir with James Carter (Friday through Sunday) Led by Mr. Pope, a tenor saxophonist and composer from Philadelphia, this band features nine saxophones and a rhythm section and produces an unmistakable, vibrant sound. As on “Odean’s List” (In and Out), an album released last year, this engagement will feature yet another saxophonist as a guest soloist: Mr. Carter, a longtime admirer and fellow traveler of the band. At 8 and 10:30 p.m., Blue Note, 131 West Third Street, Greenwich Village , (212) 475-8592, bluenote.net; $35 at tables, $20 at the bar, with a $5 cover. (Chinen)

John Zorn’s Masada Marathon (Wednesday) Coming in the middle of a busy stretch for Mr. Zorn — Friday sees the premiere of his “Machine de l’Être,” and Sunday has him presiding over his first of several all-star benefits for Japanese disaster relief — this concert features music from the Masada canon, inspired by his Jewish heritage. In addition to several Masada ensembles, it will feature the cellist Erik Friedlander in a solo set; Secret Chiefs 3; the pianist Uri Caine; Medeski, Martin and Dunn; and Cyro Baptista’s Banquet of the Spirits, among others. At 8 p.m., David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center , (212) 721-6500, nycopera.com; $12 to $65. (Chinen)
