Spontaneous Creativity Compliments Present Music
D/IVA featuring Iva Bittová – March 19, 2011

(Milwaukee, WI-January 18) The Present Music Ensemble will perform with Iva Bittová, a Czech singer, violinist and composer on Saturday, March 19 at 7:30pm at the Humphrey Scottish Rite Masonic Center. Bittová’s irresistible charm, original use of voice, and fondness of melodies sit on the border of avant-garde and folk music. Her compositions are deeply rooted in classical and gypsy music. The Present Music Ensemble will also perform Steve Reich‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet.

Iva Bittová was born in 1958 in Bruntál in northern Moravia in what was then Czechoslovakia and is now the Czech Republic. Bittová attended drama pre-school, specializing in violin and ballet. She gained admittance to the Music Conservatory in Brno where she graduated in drama and music. During her studies, Bittová worked as an actress and musician in Brno’s Divadlo Husa na provázku (Goose On A String Theater). She cites these engagements as some of the most formative and influential of her life.

Ecstatic Music Festival Marathon at Merkin Concert Hall

Merkin Concert Hall
Image via Wikipedia

From NYTimes.com:

For the dozens of artists who participated in the opening marathon concert of the Ecstatic Music Festival at Merkin Concert Hall on Monday, the event was less a defining breakthrough moment than the establishment — temporary or not — of an uptown beachhead for a flourishing alliance normally encountered in downtown and Brooklyn spaces like Le Poisson Rouge, Galapagos Art Space, Issue Project Room and Joe’s Pub.
