Roscoe Mitchell 70th Birthday Celebration
Thursday, February 17, 2010

8PM at Roulette
20 Greene Street (between Canal and Grand)

Two contrasting settings showcase the innovative woodwind virtuosity of Art Ensemble of Chicago founder Roscoe Mitchell. An iconoclastic soloist and prolific composer, Mitchell’s music has influenced generations of musicians. Electronic music pioneer David Wessel and Roscoe Mitchell, time collaborators, play a set of duo improvisations, followed by the Roscoe Mitchell Quartet, featuring Dave Burrell (piano), Henry Grimes (bass), and Tani Tabbal (drums).

Roscoe Mitchell’s innovation as a solo performer, his role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for more than four decades. Roscoe Mitchell is a founding member of the world renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, and the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. An innovator in the field of solo instrumental improvisation and an iconoclastic composer in various settings, Mitchell has recorded over 100 albums and has written hundreds of compositions. His compositions range from classical to contemporary, from wild and forceful free jazz to ornate chamber music.

David Wessel studied mathematics and experimental psychology at the University of Illinois and received a doctorate in mathematical psychology from Stanford in 1972. In 1976, at the invitation of Pierre Boulez, he moved to Paris to work as member of the team that began the Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustic/Musique (IRCAM). In 1988, he joined the faculty at UC Berkeley and founded the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT). He is particularly interested in live-performance computer music where improvisation plays an essential role. He has collaborated in performance with a variety of improvising composers including Roscoe Mitchell (a collaboration that dates back to the IRCAM days), Steve Coleman, Ushio Torikai, Thomas Buckner, Vinko Globokar, Jin Hi Kim, Shafqat Ali Khan, and Laetitia Sonami.
