Now in its 14th year, Edgefest, Ann Arbor’s annual celebration of avant-garde jazz and other improvised music, has long been one of the best reasons for living in metro Detroit. The festival, which runs through Saturday at the Kerrytown Concert House and environs, has adopted a theme for 2010, “Edged in Brass.” Its lineup is deep with leading brass players, among them trumpeter Amir ElSaffar, cornetist Taylor Ho Bynum and trombonist Curtis Hasselbring.

This November, composer/conductor Darcy James Argue and his acclaimed 18-piece big band, Secret Society, will return to New York’s Jazz Gallery for a two-night stand (11/12 and 11/13) before heading off to Europe for performances at the London Jazz Festival (11/18) and the Aperitivo in Concerto series at Teatro Manzoni in Milan, Italy (11/21).
