Illusion of Safety in Pittsburgh Area Tomorrow

From Pittsburgh New Music Net:

Since 1983 Illusion Of Safety has been the ongoing project of Daniel Burke, working alone and with various collaborators. They have released over 20 CDs on labels such as Complacency, Die Stadt, Experimedia, Odd Size, Silent, Soleilmoon, Staalplaat, Tesco, and Waystyx, and played over three hundred concerts in Europe and North America. IOS’ work has been called ambient, post-industrial, electro-acoustic, noise, sound collage, improvisation, and power electronics, but they are unwilling to limit their work to any given style or method. The sonic character and affective substance of the music will often shift abruptly within each recording and live performance.

Output:Noise Show in Syracuse, This Saturday

From Output:Noise:

Output:NOISE is pleased to present our first showcase of experimental music and improvised atmospheres at Spark Contemporary Art Space:

Berberine is an Albany based experimental trio (Kevin Johnston and Erica Sparrow of Bone Parade and Jason Cosco of The Grab Ass Cowboys) that concocts frightening atmospheres and a presence that, despite its minimalism, is of leveling intensity. Berberine is simultaneously provocative, haunting and beautiful.

The Rochester improv. trio, Torus, is comprised of John Horner (bass), Ariel Cruz (drums) and R. Scott Oliver (guitar). Live, Torus unravels a dense sound with it’s members intertwined in a spiral that builds with such ferocity that you’re certain nothing short of the apocalypse will be at the end of their journey.

Divided between Rochester and Syracuse, The Table (Chris Hine, Craig Marlowe and Jeremy Dziedzic) performs improvised electronic/electro-acoustic soundscapes with only as much equipment as they are capable of fitting on one available table.

Repeater is the brainchild of the multi-talented Martin Freeman. Utilizing guitar, effects and his own electronic devices, Freeman develops emotionally charged and intellectually challenging sets that, capable of shifting from harsh noise to delicate guitar, never leave you questioning his gift as a musician.

Berberine, Torus, The Table and Repeater perform Saturday, September 18th at Spark Contemporary Art Space with special guest, Alexey Vs contributing live film projections.

From Improvised Communications:

On Friday, October 15th, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will present the local debut of New York-based vibraphonist/composer Chris Dingman‘s eclectic suite, Waking Dreams. The Wesleyan University alumnus composed this extended work over the past five years, drawing on influences including African and Indian music, minimalism and electronic music in addition to modern jazz. The suite is realized by his working quintet of the same name, which features a revolving cast of some of New York’s most active young musicians. This performance will feature saxophonist Loren Stillman, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Aidan Carroll and drummer Eric McPherson.

Creative improvised music highlights: Sept 17-19 in Madison

Marilyn Crispell

From Madison Jazz:

Friday night is unusually big for experimental music. UW-Milwaukee saxophonist Stephen Nelson-Raney teams up with Hal Rammel and his invented instruments at Mother Fools starting at 8pm. The Madison Jazz Calendar has a good synopsis of this event (unfortunately, recent calendar changes by Google don’t allow word wrap when viewed with IE – other browsers will perform better). Later at 9:30, Magnus continues its recent trend towards more adventuresome programming by bringing in contemporary classical composer Gabriel Prokefiev, grandson of Sergei. Gabriel has started his own label which features classical music combined with sounds from turntables, and digital laptop techniques. In this interview Gabriel explains his music:

Sunday afternoon Farley’s House of Pianos hosts Marilyn Crispell, a giant in the free jazz scene. Besides working as a soloist and leader of her own groups, Crispell has performed and recorded extensively with well-known players on the American and international jazz scene. She has won numerous awards and fellowships.
