Upcoming Detroit Shows

From the Bohemian in Exile:

Sept. 16: Chicago Underground Duo @ Cliff Bells, Detroit
Rob Mazurek (cornet, electronics) and Chad Taylor (drums, mbira etc.) are no strangers to our programming, having performed several times in our series. They both also perform in the Chicago Underground Quartet and C.U. Orchestra. The smaller combo leaves plenty of room for it’s members to stretch out; the judicious use of electronics adds an additional dimension to the sound. The duo’s new release, Boca Negra, was recorded in Brazil as is the 4th release by the group and the 11th Chicago Underground-related recording. Appropriate to it’s mixture of experimental music and broad accessibility, the record is on Chicago’s noted Thrill Jockey label. Chad Taylor has worked with Digital Primitives (Cooper Moore/Assif Tsahar), Iron and Wine, Tom Abbs, Marc Ribot‘s Spiritual Unity (with David Murray), The Jemeel Moondoc Quartet, Eugene Chadbourne, Derek Bailey, William Paker, Peter Brotzmann and many others. Rob Mazurek leads The Exploding Start Orchestra, Madarin Movie and San Paulo Underground. Like Chad, his work runs the gamut from improvising greats like Bill Dixon and Fred Hopkins to experimental pop and art rock with Tortoise, Stereolab and Gastr del Sol.
Music at 9 pm; $10 suggested.

Eliane Radigue Coming to Bowerbird

From Philly’s Bowerbird:

Eliane Radigue: Naldjorlak
American premiere of the complete cycle

Charles Curtis, cello
Bruno Martinez , basset horn
Carol Robinson, basset horn

Friday, September 24th
at Christ Church Neighborhood House
20 North American Street
Philadelphia, PA
8pm; $15, $9 in advance

This is the American premiere of a significant new work by a highly influential composer performed by a mind-melting roster of international musicians. More so than almost any other piece, Naldjorlak demands to be heard live. The resonance, acoustic phenomenon, and truly elastic manipulation of time can only truly be experienced by being in the same physical space as the performers. Naldjorlak is a blissfully sensual portrait of an instrument’s sonic personality, played out over three, hauntingly ritualistic movements – the first for solo cello, the second for two basset horns (a close cousin of the bass clarinet), and the third for this trio combined.

After more than 30 years of infinitely discrete electronic music, Eliane Radigue abandoned her cherished Arp 2500 synthesizer to devote herself entirely to acoustic composition. Monumental in length (2h30m) but delicate due to the acoustic treatment of the pulsing and murmuring sounds, Naldjorlak was conceived as a trilogy with incredibly subtle harmonics, sub-tones and partials interacting continuously. The piece was elaborated in close collaboration with three virtuoso musicians: cellist Charles Curtis and basset horn players Carol Robinson and Bruno Martinez. The suspension of time, the dialog with eternity, the proximity to silence, an appeal to contemplation, and exceptional concentration – all that has characterized Eliane Radigue’s music since 1970, is now more relevant than ever. But, Naldjorlak takes her even further on her musical journey, because with these three performers, she has found the ideal means of coming ever closer to the “impalpable chimerical” music of her dreams.

Since she burst onto the scene in 1996 after earning her graduate diploma from New England Conservatory, Fujii has led some of the most consistently creative ensembles in modern improvised music.
