Arts for Art (AFA) is thrilled to present their annual celebration of creative artists in the creative environment of NYC’s community gardens. Sunday afternoon In Garden performances bring cutting edge creative music, poetry and dance into our community gardens. In a city full of concrete venues, our performers and audiences rarely have the chance to experience art in beautiful, open, green spaces. These In Garden performances open eyes and ears to new music and art, furthering the accessibility of the innovative arts. The In Gardens performances realize Arts for Art’s passion to share our art and gifts with the neighborhoods in which we live and work.

Weekly performances at the First Street Garden (between 1st and 2nd Ave.) run from September 12, through October 24, 2010. On September 19th and October 17th, 2010 there are special events in additional gardens in the LES and Brooklyn. The performances are free to adults and children of all ages ($5 Suggested Donation for Artists).
Special Events:

September 12 at the First Street Garden William Parker will premiere Segments of Light a piece for 15 bassists.
October 17 in Windsor Garden, Brooklyn performances will be dedicated to Bob Bowen (recently deceased as a result of a hit and run). It will include a conduction led by Roy Nathanson.

The Bad Plus, 'Never Stop' Available for Free Streaming

From NPR:

That Bad Plus “sound” offers little in the way of jazz as popularly imagined. The band’s compositions, which come from all three members, have a sophisticated architecture; they also have an impish, understated glee that can be mistaken for irony (“Beryl Loves to Dance,” “My Friend Metatron”). There are big, throbbing beats (“Never Stop”), free-improv spasms (“2 p.m.”), non-bluesy but harmonically intriguing chord voicings (like, everything). It’s an improvising piano-bass-drums group — a celebrated jazz layout, with musicians fluent in the standard tongues of jazz — which probably wouldn’t mind if you called it a weirdo instrumental rock band.
