Ikue Mori and guests, Cafe Oto

From Mapsadaisical reviews Mori’s recent residency.

With this residency at Cafe Oto, in a strange way it feels like Ikue Mori has come full circle. Over the course of these three days, Mori is playing with some of the UK’s – and indeed the world’s – top improvisers. Mori is, after all, someone who was once described by Lester Bangs as being the equal of free jazz pioneer Sunny Murray on drums, so she should be able to hold her own in a lineup which pits her in duo and quartet settings with the free jazz musicians Evan Parker, John Russell and John Edwards (funnily enough, John Edwards actually plays at this same venue with Sunny Murray next week). The difference is that Mori’s drumming days are long behind her now, she has favoured laptop in her recent collaborations with the likes of Zeena Parkins, John Zorn, and Kim Gordon, and also now during this first night of the residency.

Present Music Season Opener with Gabriel Prokofiev and Phillip Bush

From Milwaukee’s Present Music:

Present Music launches its 2010-11 season with London-based composer, dj and producer, Gabriel Prokofiev on September 18 at Turner Hall Ballroom. This is the first Milwaukee appearance by Prokofiev, founder of the Nonclassical record label and the grandson of the great Sergei Prokofiev. The PM ensemble will perform his acclaimed composition, Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra. Prokofiev will end the concert with a remix of the music performed earlier in the evening.

The other portion of this concert will feature Phillip Bush, PM keyboardist/pianist who is retiring from PM after 15 seasons. He will perform the five-movement, 22-minute György Ligeti piano concerto for his farewell performance.

Prokofiev studied music and electroacoustic composition at Birmingham and York Universities. He produced dance, electro and hip-hop music prior to returning to his classical roots to compose Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra which was premiered by DJ Yoda and Heritage Orchestra. The corresponding album won Best Contemporary Classical CD at the Independent Music Awards in 2010. He has also composed works for Russian pianist geNIA, Joby Burgess of Powerplant and vocal trio Juice.

Bush is the founder of May Music in Charlotte, an annual chamber, contemporary music and film festival.
