From Milwaukee’s Present Music:
Present Music launches its 2010-11 season with London-based composer, dj and producer, Gabriel Prokofiev on September 18 at Turner Hall Ballroom. This is the first Milwaukee appearance by Prokofiev, founder of the Nonclassical record label and the grandson of the great Sergei Prokofiev. The PM ensemble will perform his acclaimed composition, Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra. Prokofiev will end the concert with a remix of the music performed earlier in the evening.
The other portion of this concert will feature Phillip Bush, PM keyboardist/pianist who is retiring from PM after 15 seasons. He will perform the five-movement, 22-minute György Ligeti piano concerto for his farewell performance.
Prokofiev studied music and electroacoustic composition at Birmingham and York Universities. He produced dance, electro and hip-hop music prior to returning to his classical roots to compose Concerto for Turntables and Orchestra which was premiered by DJ Yoda and Heritage Orchestra. The corresponding album won Best Contemporary Classical CD at the Independent Music Awards in 2010. He has also composed works for Russian pianist geNIA, Joby Burgess of Powerplant and vocal trio Juice.
