Backlogged

A big thanks to everyone who has been sending me submissions for the site over the last few weeks.

And a big apology to the same group of people for how slowly I’ve been responding to them.

For the next few days I’m going through a busy period and will probably not get to post much. Anything I do post will likely be low-hanging fruit that takes little effort on my part. Nonetheless, I have saved all recent submissions and will get through them eventually.

If you want to announce an event that is timely, just send me a high priority message with the event clearly described with a link to its web site and I might be able to squeeze it in.

Thanks.

New York New Music Ensemble Plays at Merkin Hall

From NYTimes.com:

Trendy ensembles that play accessible, eclectic new music get most of the attention (and listeners) these days, but you have to admire groups like the New York New Music Ensemble for continuing to champion the more rigorous end of the contemporary repertory. These are musicians for whom sharp-edged themes, complex rhythms and dense harmonies hold no terrors, and they usually make the works they play, however thorny, sound fresh and vital.

Mirko Uhlig, Supper (CDR Afe)
Mirko Uhlig´s Supper has a fascinating backstory, but in the end, it´s all about the timbre, resonance and vibration of one track, ”My Child Goes to the Surf (2nd)”. Uhlig is a true explorer, questing to find new continents of sound. Sometimes he merely discovers islands, but these too are…

Chihei Hatakeyama, Saunter (Room 40)
A certain ineffable gravitas characterizes Chihei Hatakeyama´s Saunter. Its levelheaded construction, its aesthetic maturity and steely gaze bears all the hallmarks of an artist at the top of his game, despite the fact that this is only the third solo effort in the discography of a relatively young…

Tom White, In Poor Visibility (Hibernate)
On the cover appears a dreary rural or suburban landscape, some tertiary road running through nowhere, shot through the rear window of a moving vehicle. The sunlight is strong enough to disturb the image somewhat but not enough to have any effect on the remnant snow by the roadside. Everything has a…
