DARCY JAMES ARGUE’S SECRET SOCIETY (Tuesday) “Infernal Machines” (New Amsterdam), one of the most celebrated jazz releases of 2009, was the debut of this ultramodern big band, led by Mr. Argue, an indefatigable young composer. Girded with indie-rock textures and a generous sense of drama, it still captures only part of what the group can pull off live — as it sets out to demonstrate here, as part of the 40th-anniversary festivities for the New England Conservatory jazz program. At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan , (212) 576-2232, jazzstandard.net; $25. (Chinen)
ANTHONY COLEMAN/JEREMY UDDEN (Saturday) This double bill comes courtesy of the New England Conservatory, which is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its jazz program. Mr. Coleman, a pianist, appears at 9 p.m. in a quartet with Ashley Paul on alto saxophone, Sean Conly on bass and Satoshi Takeshi on drums; Mr. Udden, a saxophonist, holds a 10:30 slot with Plainville, his project featuring the guitarist Brad Shepik and the keyboardist Pete Rende. Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, West Village , (212) 989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com; cover, $10, with a one-drink minimum. (Chinen)
MARTY EHRLICH QUARTET (Wednesday) Marty Ehrlich is a proficient clarinetist and saxophonist whose music leans toward a jangly sort of lyricism. He has a lot of history with the trombonist Ray Anderson, his fellow frontman in a quartet that also includes John Hébert on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. They appear as part of the 40th-anniversary festivities for the New England Conservatory jazz program. At 9:30 p.m., Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan , (212) 576-2232, jazzstandard.net; $25. (Chinen)
VINNY GOLIA (Wednesday) A pillar of the West Coast free-improvising scene, and a force as both a multireedist and a composer, Mr. Golia appears in responsive company during an early set here, at 8 p.m.: the trumpeter Darren Johnston, the alto saxophonist Steve Adams, the bassist Ken Filiano and the drummer Harris Eisenstadt. His second set, at 10, will be in sparse tandem with Mr. Filiano, a semiregular duet partner. At 8 and 10, the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, (718) 789-2762, thestonenyc.com; $10 per set. (Chinen)
THE NEW MELLOW EDWARDS (Thursday) The trombonist Curtis Hasselbring leads this rough-and-tumble band, which applies an indie-rock brashness to his original tunes; the lineup includes Chris Speed on clarinet and tenor saxophone, Trevor Dunn on bass and John Hollenbeck on drums. After the band’s 7 p.m. set, part of the 40th-anniversary festivities for the New England Conservatory’s jazz program, the pianist Frank Carlberg will lead a jam session. Douglass Street Music Collective, 295 Douglass Street, near Third Avenue, Gowanus, Brooklyn , myspace.com/295douglass; $10. (Chinen)
THE PUBLIC OPTION/NOAH PREMINGER (Monday) This double bill begins with the Public Option, an updated hard-bop quintet led by the trumpeter Jason Palmer, at 7 p.m. Then, at 10, Mr. Preminger, a serious-minded young tenor saxophonist, leads a group stocked with flexible partners: the guitarist Ben Monder, the bassist John Hébert and the drummer Matt Wilson. 55 Bar, 55 Christopher Street, West Village , (212) 929-9883, 55bar.com; no cover for the first set; $10 after 9:30 p.m. (Chinen)
ROVA SAXOPHONE QUARTET (Saturday) This visionary all-saxophone ensemble — consisting of Larry Ochs, Bruce Ackley, Jon Raskin and Steve Adams — has an invigorating new album, “The Celestial Septet” (New World), made with the Nels Cline Singers, a guitar-bass-drums trio. For this rare New York stand at the Stone, Rova plays two sets: first, at 8 p.m., in standard quartet form, unveiling some new music; then, at 10, with yet another saxophonist, John Zorn, who runs the place. The Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village , thestonenyc.com; $10 per set. (Chinen)
SCIENSONIC EVENING OF NEW MUSIC WITH SCOTT ROBINSON (Friday) Outer space and early swing are equal preoccupations for the multireedist Scott Robinson, who’s best known as a stalwart sideman. He has two new recordings on his own label, ScienSonic Laboratories: one featuring the Sun Ra Arkestra bandleader Marshall Allen (on alto saxophone, flute and electronics) and the other featuring Justin Thayer (on bass). Both of those collaborators will appear at this release party, with Mr. Robinson and others. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Cornelia Street Café, 29 Cornelia Street, West Village , (212) 989-9319, corneliastreetcafe.com; $15, with a $6 minimum. (Chinen)
