Ars Nova Turns A Jazzy 10

From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Ars Nova Workshop, this city’s adventurous nonprofit jazz and experimental music booking institution, commemorates its 10th anniversary this season. It’s a big birthday. But curator/executive director Mark Christman didn’t have to do anything special – just keep the music coming.

Since its first show with saxophonist Chris Speed’s Yeah NO in 2000, Ars Nova has brought more than 400 innovators in jazz, old and new, to play events at local spaces such as International House and the Philadelphia Art Alliance.

JACK Quartet – At Merkin Concert Hall, Modern Sounds, Some From the 1300s

From NYTimes.com:

The young, hip JACK Quartet has proved it can play a gig at a club. The first time I heard this brilliant ensemble was in October 2008 at Le Poisson Rouge in Greenwich Village. That night the players — young men in jeans and T-shirts — gave viscerally exciting performances of the complete works for string quartet by the thorny modernist composer Iannis Xenakis. The mostly young listeners, seated at tables sipping drinks, were eager to experience what must have seemed completely out there, modern music.

Paul Stapleton and Nick Williams at Stet Lab

From Stet Lab in Cork, Ireland:

Stet Lab featuring Paul Stapleton and Nick Williams

Monday, 8 March 2010
9:00 pm (doors: 8:45 pm)
Upstairs @ The Roundy [map…]
Castle Street
Cork, Ireland

Stet Lab, Cork’s monthly improvised music event, returns on Monday, 8th March 2010. Taking place upstairs at The Roundy, Castle Street, Cork, Stet Lab presents Belfast-based sound-sculptor, guitarist and electronic musician Paul Stapleton and Newcastle-based electronic musician and guitarist Nick Williams.

Originally from California, Stapleton is currently based at the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Queen’s University Belfast. He is an active improviser, instrument builder, ensemble director and installation artist who has shown work in a variety of locations across Ireland, Great Britain and North America. Improvisation is a key element in his work, especially in its intersection with environmental and social forces.

Joining Stapleton on the night will be sonic improviser and guitarist Nick Williams. Currently based in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Williams’ work takes the form of cross-disciplinary performances enrolling new instruments and new electro-acoustic resources.

Collaboratively, Stapleton and Williams are, with dancer Mona McCarthy (from Cork, based in Newcastle), the interdisciplinary performance group theybreakinpieces. Through this group they have performed with artists such as Ben Evans, Jon Aveyard and Dan Reynolds.

The event will begin at 9:00 pm (doors open at 8:45 pm) and entry is €10 (€5).

New From Deep Listening

Recent releases from the Deep Listening Institute:

Telematic Circle – Tele-Colonization

Tele-Colonization is a compositional concept for a semistructured group improvisation for two or more co-located ensembles. It was recorded during the International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD) in Montreal on June 26, 2007, where the work was performed by two ensembles: Tintinnabulate and SoundWIRE. The main site was located in Tanna Schulich Hall at McGill University. Members of the Tintinnabulate ensemble performed in Montreal under the guidance of Pauline Oliveros. Three remote sites contributed to the concert: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with members from Tintinnabulate, Stanford University and KAIST in Seoul, South Korea. The SoundWIRE ensemble, directed by Chris Chafe, performed at the latter two locations.

Marc Jensen
Marking the Contours of the Eternal Moment: indeterminate scores 2002-2009

Marc Jensen is a composer, performer, and improviser, who received his Ph.D. in composition from the University of Minnesota. Much of his work is oriented around composing relationships rather than specific sounds – setting up situations in which performers follow simple sets of rules to interact and produce an unpredictably complex whole, structures without content. His principle teachers have included Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Curran, Alex Lubet, and Doug Geers. Dr. Jensen holds a teaching certificate through the Deep Listening Institute, and has edited several books on Deep Listening. He has published articles in the journals Perspectives of New Music, Tempo, the Musical Times, and Cinema Journal.

Geoff Gersh – These Predicaments

Geoff uses manipulated field recordings, reel-to-reel tape recordings, zither and electric guitar, sometimes bowed with metal files, to create sonic landscapes that evoke the emotions of David’s paintings and take the listener on a melancholic sonic journey.

Triple Point – Sound Shadows

The trio Triple Point was founded by Jonas Braasch, Pauline Oliveros, and Doug Van Nort in 2008 and complemented by Stuart Dempster for this recording. The band derives its name from the thermodynamical point in the phase diagram where all three phases of water exist. Figuratively, this is where the trio operates exploring musical spaces and boundary conditions where contrasting ideas and streams can co-exist, while expanding the vocabulary of musical instruments acoustically (Braasch on soprano saxophone) and electronically (Oliveros, digital accordion and Expanded Instrument System, EIS, Doug van Nort on laptop and GREIS).
