Exploring John Zorn’s Continent at Abrons Art Center

Il concerto di John Zorn 1

From NYTimes.com:

If the output of any prolific composer can be likened to a world, then John Zorn’s Masada is a sprawling continent, with its own richly varied climate and topography, its own regional twists on a governing tongue. Since the early-1990s, which saw the formation of the first Masada band — with Mr. Zorn on alto saxophone, Dave Douglas on trumpet, Greg Cohen on bass and Joey Baron on drums — the concept has broadened and stabilized, becoming ever sturdier and less surprising.

CIMM Fest

CIMM Fest takes place March 4-7 in Chicago and offers a couple of interesting shows:

DJ Spooky (a.k.a. Paul D. Miller) is a writer, conceptual artist, and pioneer in the field of mashups and mixing; a politically-minded musical archivist who works at the borders of performance art and musical statement. Spooky connects soul music’s “then” and “now,” cutting soul-inspired vinyl with video footage from Wattstax, Mel Stuart’s acclaimed documentary. Wattstax chronicles the monumental 1972 concert.

Thee Majesty began in 1998 as a spoken word project, originally founded by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge of Psychic TV and Bryin Dall of 4th Sign of the Apocalypse, A Murder of Angels and Dream Into Dust. Featuring P-Orridge, Thee Majesty is made up of a revolving group of members including Morrison Edley of PTV3 and The Toilet Boys. Thee Majesty’s music is a mix of spoken word performance art against Dall’s free-flowing guitar rhythms.

Bassist and Composer Carl Testa Plays Elastic

From the Chicago Reader:

Bassist, composer, and former Chicagoan Carl Testa, a member of Anthony Braxton’s Septet and 12 + 1tet, has been in town for the past week playing some low-key gigs, and he closes out his visit with a performance tonight at Elastic. Testa, now based in New Haven, Connecticut, will play some pieces for solo bass and improvise with trombonist Nick Broste and bass clarinetist Jeff Kimmel. The main part of his set, however, will be a new piece (so far untitled) for three instrumentalists/vocalists and electronics, also featuring Broste and Kimmel. Opening the show is a trio led by violinist Jonathan Chen, another former Chicagoan, with bassist Tatsu Aoki and cellist Jamie Kempkers.
