From Ensemble Pi:

Ensemble Pi returns to The Cooper Union’s Great Hall with its annual Peace Project concert, Dancer on a Tightrope, March 13 at 8 p.m.

World premiere of Karim al-Zand’s setting of Leo Lionni classic children tale, Swimmy, with large-scale projections

World premiere of Kristin Norderval’s A Remarkable Failure

New York premiere of Frederic Rzewski’s Whangdoodles

Works by Sofia Gubaidulina and Behzad Ranjbaran

New music collective Ensemble Pi returns to The Cooper Union’s Great Hall with its annual Peace Project concert, Dancer on a Tightrope, on March 13, 2010 at 8 p.m. This year’s program will address the courage and compassion necessary to fight for one’s belief with works celebrating life as risk and art as flight into another existence. Highlights include the world premieres of Canadian-American composer Karim al-Zand’s Swimmy (2010) – a setting of Leo Lionni’s Caldecott Honor picture book of the same title, and composer/vocalist Kristin Norderval’s A Remarkable Failure (2010) – a setting of prominent Israeli journalist and author Amira Hass’s acceptance speech for the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation. Both works, commissioned by Ensemble Pi, are performed by narrator/vocalist Kristin Norderval, and Swimmy is presented with large-scale video projections by Dave Channon. The evening also features the New York premiere of Frederic Rzewski’s Whangdoodles (1990) as well as Sofia Gubaidulina’s Dancer on a Tightrope (1993), and Behzad Ranjbaran’s Shiraz (2006).
